2008 MLB Rankings--Shortstop

  1. Hanley Ramirez—FLA —
Since coming into the majors, Hanley has demonstrated that he all the tools necessary to be a perennial All-Star for years to come.
Since coming into the majors, Hanley has demonstrated that he all the tools necessary to be a perennial All-Star for years to come.
He has the potential to be the number one overall pick in your draft. Most people will side with A-Rod, but I don’t think he will have quite the same season again this year. Hanley is a beast in almost every category. 125 runs, 212 hits, nearly 30 HRs, 80+ RBI, 50+ steals, and a stellar .332 average. Add that all together with the fact that he plays shortstop and you have my first overall pick. If Josh Beckett wasn’t so dominating in the playoffs, Red Sox fans would be moaning and groaning about that trade forever.
  2. Jose Reyes—NYM — This was a close call making Reyes second over Rollins, but I’m assuming the second half of last year was a fluke. Reyes has the green light every time he is on base, and it showed (ML best 78 SBs). Some people attributed his massive steal total to fatigue that caused his second half swoon. Figure this year he gets some of his power back and approaches 20 HRs again, and gets his average back around the .300 mark. Reyes can run like a jackrabbit and should be one of the first handful of picks in the draft
  3. Jimmy Rollins—PHI —The NL’s MVP had a historic season with his bat. Only two others had ever had 20 doubles, 20 triples, 20 HRs, and 20 steals. Rollins talked plenty of smack early in the year about the Phillies being the team to beat in the NL East, and then went out and walked the walk. He also plays in a ballpark that is very helpful to an offensive player and having Chase Utley and Ryan Howard hitting behind him ensures that Jimmy sees plenty of pitches to hit. He may sneak into the first round this year after two straight great seasons. I see a slight downturn in Rollins’ numbers this year, but still a .280/24/75/40 steal campaign in ’08 would be impressive.
  4. Troy Tulowitzki—COL — After his cup of coffee in the big leagues in 2006 it didn’t look like Troy was ready to join the big boys in the majors. It all clicked in ’07 though, and Tulowitzki came out hitting and never stopped. The runner up for the NL ROY went .291/24/99 in while quickly becoming one of the leaders of the Rockies team. This is around where his minor league stats were, so don’t expect a big jump in production in the future. However, I’ll take those numbers from my shortstop any day. Don’t reach too early, but if you miss out on the Big 3, Tulowitzki is not a bad consolation prize.
  5. Derek Jeter—NYY — This would have been Carlos Guillen if he wasn’t being moved to first this season. However, Mr. Consistency put together another solid season in ’07, further cementing his legacy as one of the hardest working guys in the majors. You can practically write in a .300 average. 15-20 HRs, 70-80 RBI, and 100 runs in 2008. Jeter’s running has slowed as he gets older, but he is still a smart base runner and will chip in 15-20 steals.

Rising Star—Stephen Drew—ARI — So far the career of Stephen Drew can be summed up in two words…..big disappointment. After a pretty good last third of the season in ’06, many (including myself) expected big things in 2007. Drew didn’t deliver as he hit below .240 and only amassed 12 HRs. However, Drew has way too much potential to just fizzle out in the majors. Look for a .285/23/90 season, and he will probably snag ten bases to go with it.

Falling Stock—Michael Young—TEX — Once considered one of the most consistent SS in the league, Young’s numbers have started to fall off the last couple of years. He is still producing respectable numbers, with a .300+ average, 200 hits and 90+ RBI. However, his runs, hits, homers, and average have fallen three straight years, while his strikeouts have risen. Expect to see another year of decrease as Young falls below .300 and below 200 hits for the first time in five seasons.

Make or Break Year—Miguel Tejada—HOU — Tejada is another guy whose numbers have dropped for three consecutive years. Top that off with his name in the Mitchell Report, and you’ve got a guy who really needs a big season. If Tejada can return to the numbers that once made him the MVP, all will be forgiven. But, if we see another downswing in production, Miguel’s career will come into more question, and his days of being fantasy relevant may be in the rear view mirror.

Risky Pick—J.J. Hardy—MIL — Few players have had the type of first half that Hardy enjoyed in ’07. Hardy had more homers in the first two months of the season than he had in the two previous years combined. He rightfully came back down to earth in the second half, and I fully expect him to go back to what he is, an adequate player. Nice enough for the Brewers to have on their roster, but no one that should be counted on by fantasy players.

Top Prospect—Reid Brignac—TB — You won’t see Brignac to open the season in Tampa Bay this year. After crushing single-A pitching in 2006, Reid had a huge drop in batting average, and a less drastic drop in power numbers when he transitioned to AA in ’07. Chances are he will get a full season of grooming in AAA this year, however, given an injury or two in Tampa this summer, you might get to see another potential star for the Rays. He is capable of going .300/20/85/20 if he were to get a full season of ABs.

Rollins > Reyes, Calling Reyes season a fluke doesn't mean he'll have a better one than the reigning MVP

and they'll both probably put up better numbers than Ramirez...

I just don't see how anyone can drive Ramirez in...so he'll be strictly an average/OBP and steal guy...he might be better, but his numbers won't show it until his team is better...

As far as Rollins and Reyes...I'd take Reyes because there's a greater potential...What Rollins got last year is the best you'll see...

Depends on the makeup of your team

Don't forget that hidden power in Hanley's game. He'll probably top 30 homers this year.

I think your assessment of Brignac is a bit lofty.

From what I saw in Arizona Fall League from him, his glove is ready and his bat is TWO years away.

The Rays have several guys in the middle infield with "upside" so even if there are injuries, Brignac isn't going to get called up until he is ready.

The Rays have no one with "upside" in the middle of their infield, which is why worst case scenario Brignac starts opening day 2009. Bartlett is a one year stop-gap until he's ready, Ben Zobrist will never hit enough to be a ML regular, and their only true multi positional option was traded in the Garza/Young deal.

From what I saw in the Arizona Fall League, Brignac is just about ready both offensively and defensively. In '07, he had something like 53 extra base hits out of his 139 total, which is an impressive ratio and not one accomplished by a bad hitter. Fortunate enough to have a good season? Maybe, but the two times I saw him he stung the ball every time up. Just because a guy goes one for seve doesn't mean he's a bad hitter, he got robbed five times. Defensively, I thought he was noticeably better going to his right than to his left, but since the glove side is the left side, is less of a concern than if the weak side was his right.

Brignac in 2009 will give the Rays their third consecutive season of a legitimate Rookie of the Year candidate.

I saw Brignac play at least 20 games in Fall league. He simply did not bring his stick with him. If he's a better hitter than he showed me - GREAT! I'm certainly not counting on him as a solution.

Maybe it was because I saw him next to Longoria so much that he seemed a lesser talent in comparison. Will he be a decent shortstop? Sure. But I also think Ben Zobrist CAN be a decent short too (AFL's leading hitter in '06). As can Bartlett. But I'm not counting on Brignac being an All-Star by any means.

Josh Wilson, Joel Guzamn and Willy Aybar are servicable. Aki is playing second.

I don't believe Michael Young is a good choice for "falling stock". His OBP has actually increased from '06-'07, and he still got 200+ hits. If you want a guy who will get base hits for your fantasy team, I'd pick him in a heartbeat, as he has gotten 200+ hits for the past 5 seasons.

Yeah, that's true. As Young now bats 3rd in the lineup, he's going to get less pitches over the plate, and he's going to get walked a lot more.

Maybe it is because the shortstop position has become deeper with guys like Rollins, Ramirez, Reyes, etc. but Young used to be much more valuable in previous years. He is still putting up respectable numbers, but in my opinion, his numbers will continue to decline this season, His OBP may have risen 06-07, but it is still 20 points lower than it was in '05.

That's true. If you look at his stats when he hit 20+ homers, he had great years, but he just had a really slow start last year. In April, he only hit .215 along with a .236 OBP. But once he got into June, things started getting a lot better for him: .361 AVG and a .426 OBP. The only thing that I can say he does worse in is his power numbers. If he actually do well as a #3 hitter, the Rangers will win some ballgames. But now, it looks like they're pretty much screwed. He has no one to drive in, so his RBI numbers will drop, no one to drive him in (so his runs scored numbers will drop)... you get me.

Brignac will be a huge reason why I believe Tampa will win the division in 2009... and if I am wrong about that prediction, my next one is that they will win the division (yes, the same one the Sox and Yanks are in) in 2010... Somebody just might agree with me...

I say 2008. And it will have LITTLE to do with Brignac - whether it's '08, '09 or beyond... Brignac is a "piece" Evan Longoria and David Price are "cornerstones" - and all you need to know for the next dozen years.

yes, but with it being their first season in the Majors, I am not sure if they have experience enough yet to over power the Yankees and Red Sox... but when you add McGee and Davis to go along with Price, Shields, and Kazmir, all with one more year experience... Sox and Yanks alike will be crying at home in October...

Price won't see Tampa before September, and only if he has a good season. Remember, he hasn't thrown a competetive pitch since June.

Scouting report on Brignac, quoted

"Brignac's impressive approach to the game makes him a solid contributor in all phases. He improved his plate discipline and bettered his ability to hit offspeed pitches by making adjustments to his setup and load. He uses the entire field and has plus power which really stands out for a shortstop. His speed and defense are solid. Brignac reduced his strikeouts by shortening his swing with two strikes buty needs to continue to trust his hands and reduce the tendency to become pull-happy. He is still growing into his body (6'3" 180) and is making gradual improvements with his footwork and quickness. The acquisition of Jason Bartlett allows the Rays to leave him in Triple A for a full season but he he should be fully ready to take over Tampa's starting job in 2009."

Sounds like a lot more than "a piece", doesn't it?

I believe (not that I've seem him in person) that Brignac will play a Tulowitzki type role (maybe not quite as productive) but with a good work ethic and good leadership... that is what a young team like the Rays can use, and that is why I put him higher on a list than I would if he was in New York or Los Angeles

Compared to Crawford, Upton, Pena, Longoria, (crosses fingers for a healthy) Baldelli, Kazmir, Shields, Garza... yes, sounds EXACTLY like "a piece".

He certainly has potential, decent pop and definitely needs to grow into his body (he looks like he's 12) but even as a Rays fan I don't forecast him as ever being an All-Star Shortstop - I hope I'm way wrong.

Besides, if he DOES "grow into his body" how much longer will be playing shortstop?

That's not what you meant by "piece" You meant Longoria and Price are the cornerstones and everyone else is along for the ride.

Everybody sees things (or doesn't) in players and I know you did your homework, but I can't understand why you don't like the kid.

If he grows into his body then he'll be the same weight at Jeter and Tulowitzky to name a couple. He's already matched their height.

No worries there.

I like him. I just don't like him as much as everyone else.

Like I said, his glove is ready, but I don't think his bat is... A ton of AFL pitchers made him look no-so-good. And we know AFL pitchers aren't exactly top flight.

To be fair - he hit a lot of balls RIGHT at guys (not NEARLY as many as Delmon Young did this year) and sometimes those blass fall in for hits. But in a league where the best players come to work on things (hitting oppo, learning new positions, etc) Reid looked out of sync and over his head.

He wasn't even the best SS on his AFL team. A second baseman (Manny Burriss) and a third baseman (Sergio Santos) both outplayed him.

He could come a long way

Brignac's AFL numbers

113 AB (led league by one over LaPorta)

20 hits - 2 doubles, 0 triples, 2 Hr, 6 RBI, 1 SB (4 CS)

16 Ks, 3 BB

.177 AVG, .218 OBP - his .466 OPS was BY FAR the worst of ALL players in the league.

He had less total bases than TEN AFL players had hits...

Now tell me why I wasn't impressed...

WHAT was he working on??? He pulled EVERYTHING. He struck out in key situations. He didn't take any pitches. He wasn't sitting on off speed pitches.

I mean, yeah work on things like "getting on base" or "leading off", "stealing bases", "working counts".

He did NONE of this...

Maybe he was worn out by a long season. Maybe he was just there because he had to be. Little of what he did made me say "This guy is going to be a star" - LOTS of other players in AFL gave me that feeling.
