2008 Baseball Preview

With the Major League Baseball season about a month and a half away, I thought it was time to talk Baseball. I am not exactly what you would call an "expert" on Baseball, but that doesn't take away the fun of covering, watching, and playing Baseball. There are plenty of questions that may not be answered until the season kicks off on March 25th, but I'll try to answer them now. Will Johan, and Pedro help the Mets over the hump, and into the playoffs this year? How about: Can Pujols bounce back, and carry St. Louis to the playoffs? Or, will free agent acquisitions D-Train, and Cabrera live up to their expectations in Detroit?

Top 10 Headlines of the 2008 Season:

1. Will Johan live up to the GIANT expectations in New York???

New York fans' hopes have sky-rocketed for the 2008 season after signing two-time Cy-Young award winner, Johan Santana, on January 29th. Johan is very excited to be a New York Met, and to play with Pedro Martinez, who could find himself in Cooperstown in the years to come. New York has plenty of talent, which includes a spectacular pitching rotation, and young talent on the basepaths, including David Wright, and Jose Reyes. But, I think the biggest question here, is in the Fantasy category. I think just about every MLB fan out there has NY going to the playoffs with AT LEAST the Wild Card. But, is Johan still worth a first round draft pick in Fantasy Baseball. My answer is an obvious 'yes', but I think we'll have to wait until the season kicks off on March 25th to find out the answer, but I think Johan will continue to dominate (but what do I know?).

According to BBB15, Santana will continue to dominate hitters in the NL
According to BBB15, Santana will continue to dominate hitters in the NL

2. Will Detroit go back to the Playoffs???

Detroit had what is probably the best offseason in years. Detroit added ace starting pitcher, Dontrelle "D-Train" Willis, and power-hitting third baseman Miguel Cabrera (Both from Florida), to their already great team. Detroit's starting rotation now includes Justin Verlander, Jeremy Bonderman, D-Train, Kenny Rogers, and Nate Robertson. And, there lineup includes 3-4 power hitters, Cabrera, Magglio Ordonez, Gary Sheffield, and Edgar Renteria (who also has speed, and a glove). I think Detroit will take home the AL Central Title, and end up losing in the ALCS.

3. Will Boston repeat???

I think the Sox have a good shot at repeating, considering they have almost the same team as last year. Boston's pitching will continue to thrive, and their young players, Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia, and young pitchers Jonathan Papelbon, and Clay Buchholz will match their 2007 seasons. Boston will beat out the Yanks for the AL East, but I don't see this team repeating their World Series Title, or even get to the WS this year. I just think LA, and Detroit will be great, and I think LA will finally get past the great teams in the AL, and represent the American League in the World Series. So, to answer the question, NO, Boston will not repeat, they will go down in the ALDS, sorry Boston.

4. How bad will the Florida Marlins do???

After losing the "Face of the franchise", Dontrelle Willis to the Tigers, the Marlins pitching will really struggle. Florida's number 1 SP is Scott Olsen, which for some teams, may not even be in the rotation, and that's really saying something. But, I really think Florida's hitting will do just fine without Cabrera. Florida's fielding is filled with youth, and it will just take a few years for Florida to catch up to the rest of the NL East. But, for now, I think Florida will have the worst pitching staff in the Majors, and will be about 20 games under .500, like last year.

5. Who will win the NL West this year???

It seems that every year the NL West has a different leader. Last year, it was Arizona by a half a game, this year, it will be the Los Angeles Dodgers. LA was just 8 games behind the leader, with an 82-80 season last year. LA has a solid pitching rotation, and has some speed, and even added a power hitter this year in Andruw Jones, from Atlanta. Not to mention a new manager, Joe Torre, who really knows how to manage a team. LA wins the NL West this year, by a few games, but I don't see this team going far in the playoffs.

6. How about the NL Central???

Last year, the Central was won by the Chicago Cubs by just 2 games over the Milwaukee Brewers, who was led by power-hitter Prince Fielder, and rookie Ryan Braun. So, the question here is, Can the Cubs repeat? I say, yes. The Cubs have a stronger pitching rotation, and have a little more depth in their lineup than Milwaukee. St. Louis finshed 3rd, just 7 games back, and I think they will come in a close second, barely beating out Milwaukee. St. Louis added another power-hitter to accompany Albert Pujols, and has some solid pitching, too, though the bullpen isn't exactly the best it can be.

7. Will the Yankees win the Wild Card???

Since I already said the BoSox will win the AL East, the only way NY can make it to the playoffs is beating out the Tribe, and Mariners for the only AL Wild Card spot. The Yankees, as always, have one of the strongest lineups in Baseball. But, their pitching is struggling, their rotation is injury-prone, and old. Plus, you never know what you're going to get from guys like Kyle Farnsworth, and LaTroy Hawkins in their bullpen. Their Closer, Mariano Rivera, had a terrible year last year, too. The highlight of their bullpen is prospect Joba Chamberlain. I think they have a shot at beating out Cleveland and Seattle if they stay healthy, if their pitching has another off-year, then I think Cleveland will get the WC. But, for right now, I'm gonna go with NY for the fourth and final playoff spot.

8. Who will be the MVP???

AL- After Alex Rodriguez's monster year last year, I don't see why anyone will go against him this year. He's done a great job blocking the distractions, and just hitting HR after HR. A-Rod is my pick for the AL MVP again this year.

A-Rod will match last year's monster performance
A-Rod will match last year's monster performance

NL- Jose Reyes is going to have another great year this year, I'm calling it right now. Reyes will be the MVP, and lead New York to the World Series in the process. New York has a great lineup, and pitching, there's no reason why this team won't go to the World Series. Reyes for NL MVP.

9. Who will win the Cy Young???

AL- This will be "the year of the Free Agent". Former Baltimore Oriole pitcher, Erik Bedard (now an M), will be the Mariners top pitcher, and win 20 games with them. Bedard is a fantastic pitcher, he has just been on a terrible team. Actually, for a while last year Bedard was in the Cy-Young talk before he went down with an injury. Call me crazy, but Bedard will win the AL Cy-Young.

NL- Johan is going for his 3rd Cy-Young, this time for the NL. And, since I'm going with the Mets to win it all this year, why not Johan for Cy-Young??? I already have a Met for MVP, so why not Cy-Young, too?

10. World Series winner???

Didn't I just answer this? The 2008 World Series will be a matchup between the Los Angeles Angels (of Anaheim), against the New York Mets. And, unfortunately for you Boston fans, another New York team will win a championship. I guess it's just New York's year, isn't it?

So, here are the playoff teams, according to my answers above:

AL

1. Los Angeles Angels

2. Detroit Tigers

3. Boston Red Sox

4. New York Yankees

NL

1. New York Mets

2. Chicago Cubs

3. Los Angeles Dodgers

4. Philadelphia Phillies

Playoffs:

ALDS

Angels over Yankees 3-1

Tigers over Red Sox 3-2

NLDS

Mets over Phillies 3-0

Dodgers over Cubs 3-2

ALCS

Angels over Tigers 4-2

NLCS

Mets over Dodgers 4-3

WORLD SERIES

Mets over Angels 4-3

MVP: David Wright

Well, they do depend on offense for many of their games. So, if Howard, Rollins, and Utley are in top form, then they have a better chance of winning. But, then again, the Mets do have David Wright, Jose Reyes, and Carlos Beltran, so it could work to the Mets' advantage as well.

welcome to 2008...where everyone starts 0-0...

THe annoying part will be the mets hot start and the phils starting slow (if you've paid attention in the last 4 years, you'd realize this is always the same)...

Its the dog days where teams become teams

People suggesting that Santana will add 7 wins (give or take) are right...he's better than glavine, but I still don't like that rotation...Pedro is a big question mark, Maine is, among other things, a phillie killer and I personally think he could win 15 (I hate john maine, but he's real good)...I think Perez is a total schmuck and will come back to normal...

and i have no idea who the mets 5th guy is...probsbly won't help either...

The 5th guy is El Duque/Pelfrey...I say that because El Duque will only make 15-20 starts, and Pelfrey will have to fill in. They probably will collectively be as good as most 5th starters are. Perez will be the same as last year, maybe a little more inconsistent, and Maine will be better than in 2007. Pedro's the big question mark. If he can make 25-27 starts, post a 3.50 ERA or so, then the Mets will be fine. Of course, he'll probably end up around 20 starts, 4.30 ERA. Or something like that.

Good article, BBB.

1. I talked to several people about this already. I think this could work either way. Santana is a good pitcher, but he wasn't the pitcher he was when he won the Cy Young award. Plus, he's facing new batters, many who has never faced. Look at how high Barry Zito's stats went up when he went to SF... but it's Barry Zito, not Johan.

2. Umm... YEAH! They will be back in the playoffs. I actually think that they have a better shot in making the playoffs than the Yankees do, since I believe that they have the better offense now. It's an all-star lineup: Renteria, Ordonez, Pudge, Cabrera, Polanco... who cares about D-Train? He's not going to do much for Detroit.

3. I've been asked this question several times. They have a good chance to repeat, but I don't think it'll happen, just because I'm a pessimistic person.

4. I actually don't think the Marlins will do as bad as they did last year. Even though Miguel Cabrera is gone, they really on young, natural talent. I'm sure someone will fill in the third base slot... might not be as good as Cabrera, but he'll have to do, for now. I do, however, have a feeling that the Tigers will regret sending over at least one of those Minor Leaguers over to Florida.

5. Getting Andruw Jones and Joe Torre isn't that huge. It's not going to help them much, unless Jones gets back in his groove. I still think the Rockies (whose offense can tear it up) will have a great shot, as well as the Diamondbacks; now that they have Dan Haren, their pitching will be a lot better. The Dodgers were behind 8 games, don't have much pitching or offense, so why them?

6. This division is up in the air as well. I still think the Cubs will end up on top too, with the Brewers finishing a game or two over the Cards. The Cubs seem to have a lot going for them: getting Fukodume, their young starting rotation, offense, defense, Lou Piniella... they've got it all. The Brewers and Cardinals seem pretty desperate right now. I mean, look at the moves the Brewers are making... acquiring Gagne, Torres, and Mota? Their bullpen isn't that great, judging from the 2007 stats. For the Cards, to get rid of Edmonds, Rolen, and Eckstein, that's pretty scary. Who's left besides Albert Pujols?

7. It's going to be tough for the Yankees to win the Wild Card or the division. I honestly think they'll come up short this year. It all depends on how well their pitching staff is, IMO. They've got a decent offense, but that's the only thing they can rely on now. I think the Tigers can pretty much rely on their offense to win games. I can't say the same for the Yanks right now.

8. A-Rod? Good choice. He'd be a good choice any year.

Jose Reyes? Eh... I don't think so. David Wright would have a better chance than he would. But it all boils down to the stats. I'm sure Matt Holliday, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins (yes, again) will be strong candidates, but I can't predict the future that well. But if I had to pick, it'd probably be Chase Utley. He's going to do a helluva lot for the Phils this year.

9. The "Who will win the Cy Young?" question is another question that can be answered pretty quickly, whether you'll end up right or wrong. AL: CC? Beckett? Nah, I don't think so. I'm going to go with Bedard. He's got a lot to prove with his new ballclub. If the Mariners end up in the playoffs he'll probably win it. As for the NL, it won't be Johan. Why? His stats are dropping. Jake Peavy is in his prime right now, and it looks like he'll have back to backs this season.

2008: Since I'm predicting that this year is going to be the Upset Boston Year (Pats losing, my prediction of the Celts losing in the Conference Finals), it'll be the Red Sox in the World Series again, but this time, the Mets will win it over them. Forget about last season. If they just keep on doing damage and their stats don't immediately drop like they did in the last month, I'm sure they will win it. I'd love to see a Red Sox/Mets repeat... only this time, you don't have Bill Buckner missing the ground ball; you've got Kevin Youkilis (see if anything gets by HIM!)

The Red Sox won't repeat. Bucholz and Ellsbury don't have full 2007 seasons to "match." They merely played in a few games. The team isn't the same with Curt Schilling being 41 and likely to spend a great deal of time on the DL. Wakefield is also another year older.

Even without Curt Schilling, you've still got Josh Beckett, Tim Wakefield (who by the way is a knuckleballer; knucklers get better as they get older since they have more experience), Clay Buchholz, Jon Lester, and Julian Tavarez. So, you're saying that Curt Schilling will make the Red Sox rotation better? First of all, Curt Schilling has had a couple of injuries in the past, so he isn't as healthy as you think. Like you said, he's 41 years old, so he's getting up there in age. And with all of that being said, Rawb, the only 2 pitchers you didn't comment on were Beckett (who's Cy Young material, which is understandable) and Dice-K, who did worse than almost all of us thought last season. What makes you think that Schilling was going to make the pitching rotation so great if wasn't injured.

When did I say Schilling would make the rotation better?

I'm saying the Red Sox have little chance to win it all because the starting pitching isn't that good. Beckett is great, everyone else is either mediocre (Lester, Wakefield), or a question mark.

And I don't like the way the bullpen is looking.
