1972 Dolphins vs. 2007 Patriots on WhatIfSports

The 2007 Patriots roster is now available on Whatifsports.com. I decided to test out the Patriots vs. the 1972 Dolphins on a neutral site at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. Here is the result.......

Pats/Fins at Jacksonville:

Dolphins 30 Patriots 29

Garo Yepremian kicked the winning 39 yard field goal with no time left as the Dolphins rallied from 26-13 down to stun the undefeated Patriots. Tom Brady was intercepted twice, by Doug Swift and Nick Buoniconti. The Dolphins ran wild, with 249 yards rushing, as Earl Morrall and Bob Griese struggled in the passing game. The box score and other stats are shown in the pictures below:

I'll be back with results from simulations in Miami in humid weather, and in Foxboro with wicked winter storms later in the week.

Just doing some testing first, if I get a decent reception, you've got a series.

How do you save the scoring summary, and stats as an image?? Because I just copied, and pasted them into an article, and I couldn't really couldn't get the formatting right.

The No Name defense held Tom Brady to 63% completion and 2TDs/2INTs? Did you take into account that Brady was listed on the injury report as "probable" with a sore shoulder?

I am pretty sure they just list him on the injury report, so the other team would get their hopes up, and then get them crushed when Tom Brady shows up to the game in uniform.

Brady began his 4 year stint on the injury report when Mike Vick was listed as probable by the Falcons, even though they knew he wasn't going to play. The Falcons just wanted to boost day of game ticket sales so they kept Vick as probable until kickoff. Since then, Tom Brady has been probable every week. And actually, the week after that Falcons game, I think about 30 players were listed as probable. Coach Belichick does not like the injury report. He thinks it's a waste of time because it is so easy to lie in it.

Brady has a sore shoulder bc he's a QB and throws a couple hundred passes a day.

Rawb...you must know that the NFL actually came down to Belichick once or twice regarding it...

things like eye injuries and ridiculous issues were named on the report...or he was utterly vague...i believe things like "leg injury" were also used

its funny, but if one team has to disclose X amt of info, they all should...not saying he cheated, just pointing out that they essentially made a rule because of him

that and his comments about injuries are kinda funny...

What about Wade Phillips not disclosing whether or not TO would play until game time, even though everyone knew he would play?

Do these Sims take into account the change in game speed? 1972 game speed is like living on an alien planet when compared to 2007. It's possible that the '72 team hit harder but if you can't catch them you can't hit them.

The Patriots Win two more games and they're the greatest team in NFL history. Does this score mean that these two teams aren't equal yet?

The Patriots have won seventeen games in a row. This should calculate into some extra ability in the Sim.

Interesting result, non the less.

My version set in the Superdome at Dolphins winning 45 to 27, scoring 21 points in the 4th quarter. Csonka ran for 170 yards, and Morris ran for 117!

jags stadium hardly seems neutral, given one team is from miami.

and you know, the 72 dolphins didn't play a game in the regular season against a team with a winning record, whereas the patriots beat the defending super bowl champs, the current NFC regular seasons champs, etc...

not to mention that today's NFL is much tougher, and its harder to win, period.

but youre right, the no name defense would probably force Brady into the worst game of his career. that makes plenty of sense.
