Around the Bases

Due to working ten hours today at new job am writing a much shorter post than usual.... The Yankees have shaved 12 games over the 14 1/2 game lead the Red Sox had earlier this season. Schedule maker set up the Yankees to have a great finish to their season and have won three in a row while Red Sox have lost three in a row. Mike Mussina is back on track allowing no earned runs in his last 12 2/3 innings and has a 1.10 ERA for the month of September. Their last six games this season are against the Devil Rays and Orioles. Looks like Yankees have the best of both worlds with them leading the AL wildcard race by five games and if Red Sox are passed by Yankees the Red Sox should be ahead in wildcard race.

The Tigers are fading out of the AL East race and are 7 1/2 games behind the Indians with only nine games left.... Brewers won first two games of their seven game road trip to tie the Cubs for first place in the NL Central. The Brewers and Cubs have both been 7-3 in their last ten games.

The amazing Phillies have won six in a row (while the Mets have lost five in a row) and are a game and a half behind the Mets in the division and a game and a half behind the Padres in the wildcard race.... The Indians and Angels have all but sewed up their divisions so that leaves the other playoff spots open except Yankees and Red Sox should be in playoffs so this could be the four teams in AL playoffs.

In NL the playoff race is wide open with the Mets having the biggest lead with a game and a half lead over the Phillies, while Cubs and Brewers are tied in NL Central race and the Diamondbacks have a game lead over the Padres. Phillies or Padres should be the wildcard winner in NL this season.

With 10 games left, is there really anything as good as a tight division race?

It's a wonderful time of year!

Never apologize, niteowl! We will happily enjoy whatever crumbs you leave us!

I am waiting to hear the status of Ben Sheets for Milwaukee after he left last night's game after an inning. If he goes down, Milwaukee could really be hurting, since he is supposed to be their ace and an innings eater. The rotation stabilized after his return, and they need him down the stretch. Let's see if Lilly can get the win over Cinci tonight and do me a favor.

Have been offline for the last 24 hours...latest on wife is that she is getting better but unable to work so I my retirement of last December came to a screeching halt and am working for Luxottica Optical Co. in their Knoxville, Tennessee plant making lenses. Like most factory work it is fast paced and not sure if I can keep up the fast pace at 62....Manny, this has been a great year for pennant races. NL Central shows no sign of having a clearcut winner anytime soon. Without Sheets the Brewers may be doomed especially if they have to put Capuano back in rotation.

Am off the next five days so there should be posts on those days. Looks like Red Sox and Yankees are both in playoffs either as AL East champs or wild card champs.

Sounds bad for Sheets and Milwaukee...he has a hamstring strain and is not expected to make his next start Sunday against ATL, and his future status is up in the air as well.

Losing to Braves last night to a pitcher who hasn't pitched in majors since 2004 is not saying much for Brewers.
