By user JB82 We've got just one question to ask you: What did you think was the Worst Performance of 2006?
For the last time in this series, we search around for the downside of the sports world this past year. Last week, we devled into the best, and we had plenty of them, as advertised. As in life itself, there is a negative to every positive, and we had as much as of the bad stuff as we did of the good stuff.
Nominees for your consideration:
- United States in international competition: Where do we start? In June, the Hern soccer (football) team proved their 2002 World Cup run was a fluke. In September, the US never had a chance against the Europeans in the Ryder Cup. Not even the inaugural World Baseball Classic turned out right. Indiferrence by the highly-overpaid athletes we try to invite? Bad karma? Bad luck? You be the judge.
- Alex Rodriguez: Aw, hell, let's put the entire New York Yankees team on here. Why? The Yankees lineup in their American League Division Series matchup against the Detroit Tigers batted a very putrid .100. Kevin Federline had better performances than the Yanks in October!
- New York Giants: Their Monday Night game against the Jacksonville Jaguars was unwatchable for more reasons than you can throw a red challenge flag at. After Plaxeco Burris' touchdown run, it was all downhill from there as Big Blue played their sloppiest football since their debacle of a game at Seattle two months earlier and lost the second of five games in a row, 26-10.
- Barbaro: While he continues to recover from his injury in the Preaknes, we can't help but admonish the Kentucky Derby winner for crashing the gate before the Run for the Black-Eyed Susans began back on May 20.
- Michael Barrett and A.J. Pierzynski: The same day of Barbaro's injury at Pimlico, two angry broncos went at it in all-out brawl at Chicago's U.S. Cellular Field. As reported in that weekend's AWIR:
- Picture this for one moment: You're a catcher. The opposition's runner is rounding third and headed towards home plate with a full head of steam. Your left fielder is sending a throw right towards you at the same time. Suddenly, he comes toward as soon as you get the ball in you glove. You try to block the plate but somehow you both collide. In baseball, that's a part of the game. What happened afterwards (on Saturday) was certainly not.Chicago White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski bowled into Chicago Cubs catcher Michael Barrett and was called out. Pierzynski, in disgust, slapped home plate, much to Barrett's chagrin. One bear hug and right hook later, the fight was on. Both catchers, as well as ine player each, got the gate.
As always, write-ins are welcome. Just like last time, the performance can be either in one game, a stretch of time during the year or for an entire season. It can also be either an individual player or a team.
As for how you should vote...
- Worst Performance of the Year
- Second Worst Performance of the Year
- Third Worst Performance of the Year
The winner will be revealed in the AYIR to be published during the holidays. All voting closes December 23.
