Short and sweet this week, so here goes...
Bonds nears Aaron (and goes the extra mile)
Barry Bonds may have hit his 750th career home run Friday, but the game where he closed to within five taters of Hank Aaron's home run record would be remembered for him escorting a drunk fan off the field. The inabriated schnorrer got onto the field to greet Mr. BALCO in the seventh inning, and the latter took the former to the waiting arms of AT&T Park security.
Oh no, she didn't!
While the New York Yankees' series against the Oakland Athletics was mostly forgettable, one aspect came on Sunday when Alex Rodriguez' wife was seen at Yankee Stadium wearing a tanktop with what appeared to be something akin to a certain four-letter obscenity. Though it really wasn't, it did raise some controversy later on...
We didn't see one of these coming
The big shocker of the weekend came before the Seattle Mariners' game on Sunday afternoon: Mariners manager Mike Hargrove announced his resignation, claiming his baseball fires had gone out (those were my words, not his).
However, Cincinnati Reds skipper Jerry Narron was not so lucky. Narron got the can after the Reds' 11-7 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Was it over that quick?
The Detroit Tigers' 1-0 win over the Minnesota Twins was of the "blink-and-you'll-miss-it" variety. Jeremy Bonderman's shutout lasted just a smidge over two hours on Sunday night.
Some more big doings
The rosters for the 2007 MLB All-Star Game were announced late Sunday afternoon. Click here to see who made it.
O Canada...
Canada Day Weekend in the Great White North can only mean one thing: the beginning of the CFL season. Highlights from the first weekend's action...
- The Saskatchewan Roughriders broke their new coach in successfully. Kent Austin opened his CFL career with a 16-7 win over a Montreal Alouettes team whose offense looked almost nothing as it was last year.
- Meanwhile, out west, Rob Cote scored two touchdowns in front of the hometown faithful as the Calgary Stampeders blew out the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 37-9. Sandro DeAngelis, the league's leading special teams player, added three field goals in the winning effort.
Fast Track
- Denny Hamlin took his first checkered flag of the 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup season at Loudon, New Hampshire. It was also Hamlin's second career win.
- Back to the GWN for a sec; the ChampCar World Series returned to Montreal, but with a new venue. Dutch driver Robert Doornbos took his first win at Mont-Tremblant. For the last five years, the race was held at the legendary Circuit Giles Villeneuve, but was bumped out in order to put a NASCAR Busch Series race on the sked there. Doornbos, like Hamlin, is second in his series' points standings.
- Other weekend winners included Kimi Raikonnen (winner of the 2007 Grand Prix of France), Dario Franchitti (second in a row, third of the year at Richmond on Saturday night in the IRL IndyCar Series) and Valentino Rossi (MotoGP Dutch TT)
Kudos
- Aubrey Huff; the Baltimore Orioles slugger hit for the cycle on Friday night, becoming only the third of his franchise to do it. However, it was wasted effort as Chris Ray blew it in the ninth for a 9-7 loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
- Australia's rugby team, the Qantas Wallabies, for upsetting their counterparts from New Zealand 20-15 on Saturday. The Kiwis came in as the best in the entire world.
- Cristie Kerr, for clinching her first major at the US Women's Open
That's all for this week
Until next time, as always, let's all be good sports...
P.S. Much more next week
