After a week's hiatus, we're back and keeping it short and sweet this week.
NBA Conference Finals from the Armchair
There was an exciting Game 6 in the West this past weekend as well as a rather disappointing game 6 over in the East. We'll kick it off in the Western Conference.
- When last we heard from the Dallas Mavericks, they were coming off a brutal loss at the hands of the San Antonio Spurs. Eventually, they would eliminate the Spurs and advanced to face the Phoenix Suns. Despite going 8-20 from the floor, Dirk Nowitzki scored 24 and led the Mavs to their first-ever NBA Finals appearance 102-93.
- Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals featured the Miami Heat and a rather disillusioned Detroit Pistons team. The Heat played any and all Pistons internal strife to their advantage and beat the defending Eastern Conference champs 95-78.
Since the Stanley Cup Finals don't begin until Monday (6/5/06), let's move on to the weekend in baseball.
MLB Weekend from the Armchair
- It was a soggy weekend for the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets. With Friday's game rained out, the Mets split the Saturday doubleheader only to lose the Sunday finale. Bonds' stat line for the weekend: 2-7, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K.
- There was also some controversy during that game. Mets prospect Lastings Milledge, who hit a game-tying home run in the bottom of the 10th inning, gave the fans some love on his way to right field. While they loved it, players on the Giants and his Mets teammates balked at the action taken. Was it a way to show up the Giants or Millidge's way of saluting the fans? You be the judge.
- The New York Yankees head back to the Bronx after a successful roadtrip which ended with a series win over the Baltimore Orioles. The Yanks lost the last game, 11-4 with the O's being spotted a 10-0 lead by the fourth inning and Derek Jeter getting a bruised thumb in the sixth. Like I've said before, Aaron Small is no Shawn Chacon. I'm glad the latter will be coming off the disabled list. The Yanks have had too many bumps and bruises this year.
- Bad news for St. Louis Cardinals fans: The Cards dropped two of three to the Chicago Cubs Even worse news: Albert Pujols is on the 15-day DL.
That's all for this week
Until next time, let's all be good sports.
