MLB Weekend from the Armchair
- There was a little history on Sunday: Cleveland Indians first baseman Travis Hafner hit his sixth grand slam of the 2006 campaign in a 13-0 shutout of the Kansas City Royals. This ties him with Don Mattingly for the most in a season.
- More of the same: Cincinnati Reds sluggers Edwin Encarnacion, Adam Dunn and Rich Aurilia hit three consecutive home runs (individually, of course) in a 7-5 11-inning win over Randy Myers and the Philadelphia Phillies
- At Fenway Park, Boston Red Sox outfielder Manny Ramirez saw his 27-game hitting streak end, but not before delivering the game-winning hit on Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles. Brandon Fahey, who was thrown out at third base by Ramirez, ran past the latter's ground ball, thus committing an error and winning the game for the BoSox, who swept the series against the O's. Now how many of you out there thought David Ortiz delivered the game-winner?
Reds v Blues
To an American, this would probably mean Red States vs. Blue States. To an Englishman, this means Liverpool v Chelsea. Sunday was the annual FA Community Shield, which pitted the defending FA Cup and Premier League champions (Liverpool and Chelsea repsectively). In this edition, the Reds took the Shield 2-1 on an 80th minute header by Peter Crouch.
Fast Track
- Kevin Harvick temporarily swiped Tony Stewart's title as King of Watkins Glen. The driver of the #29 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet won the AMD at the Glen, the second and final road course event on the NASCAR Nextel Cup circuit.
- Indianapolis 500 champion Sam Hornish, Jr. won the IRL IndyCar event at Kentucky Speedway, while A.J. Allmendinger took the checkered flag in the Champ Car World Series event at Denver.
Odds & Sods
- In horse racing, The Tin Man (we're talking a thoroughbred race horse here, not the Wizard of Oz character) won the Arlington Million at Arlington Race Track outside Chicago.
- New York Jets fans were impressed to see that their quarterback Chad Pennington – at least his reconstructed shoulder – was able to take a licking and keep on ticking in the Jets' 16-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Pennington went 9-14 and threw for 54 yards while losing a fumble in the process.
- No Deion Branch, slight problem for the New England Patriots, as they lost to the Atlanta Falcons 26-23 on Friday night in the ATL. Falcons kicker Michael Koenen booted four field goals, including the clincher from 40 yards out. While the Patriots try to figure out the successor to Adam Vinatieri, the Falcons have found their answer to the three-time Super Bowl winner.
That's all for now
Apologies for an AWIR that looks as though it was thrown together at the last possible minute. A more detailed edition (or as detailed as circumstances allow) next week.
But first, with the NFL regular season under a month away, there is some internal debate as to whether or not Sunday's action should deserve a seperate column. Any thoughts on what to do can be left in the Comments section.
Until then, let's all be good sports.
