Armchair Weekend in Review (April 7-9, 2006)

Well, it was a busy weekend in the world of sports. In this, the first of what will hopefully be a weekly feature, I will give my two cents on the goings-on during the weekend.
Phil Mickelson wins at Augusta again
Two years ago, Phil Mickelson looked as though he would never win a major in his PGA career. Well, Lefty will go through the 2006 Tour season with at least one major championship title under his belt. It seemed as though he told Tiger Woods to hold his green jacket for a year. Anyone want to pencil in Mickelson - man-boobs and all - for a repeat in June at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, NY?
Tiger, the sentimental favorite going in due to what appears to be his father's terminal illness (cancer), finished in a tie for third place at four strokes under par with such notables as Fred Couples, 1999 champion Jose Maria Olazabal, and Retief Goosen [1]. The sad part here is that Woods the Elder may not be around the next time his son wins at Augusta. My thoughts and prayers go out to Tiger and his family. (UPDATE 6/1/2006: Earl Woods eventually passed away the following month.)
Yankees back on track
I guess somebody associated with the New York Yankees must've read my opinion of two days ago (April 8) after the Yanks lost again Saturday night. Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada went yard for the Bronx Bombers and limited another star pitcher - Bartolo Colon - to just two innings. By the way, the Yankees won 10-1. Centerfielder Johnny Damon told New York Post columnist Mike Vaccaro that a 1-5 start "wouldn't have made anyone happy," and who am I to argue with him[2].
Favre on the fence
Months after the NFL put an end to its potential salary cap disaster, the biggest news coming out of the league is whether or not Brett Favre will be playing in the 2006 season [3]. One side of me says the Green Bay Packers quarterback should, for some reason, go ahead and play and try to turn around a 4-12 season and thus, go out on top. Another side says he should step aside and let Aaron Rodgers take the Pack into the future. One thing's for sure: things haven't been this wack in Wisconsin since Lombardi left town.
