Alright, friends, we have gotten down to the nitty-gritty as we are about to reveal nominees for the Team of the Year.
Nominees are as follows:
Nominees for your consideration:
- George Mason University men's basketball team: The biggest NCAA Tournament Cinderella in recent memory surprised the college basketball world and extended their amazing run all the way to the Final Four.
- St. Louis Cardinals: 2006 World Series Champions
- Ohio State University football team: Led by Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith, the Buckeyes held the top spot in the Bowl Championship Series wire to wire and look to win the BCS Championship.
- University of Texas football team: Even though most of their triumphs came the year before, the Longhorns, led by now-NFL rookie sensation Vince Young, dueled it out with the University of Southern California Trojans in the Rose Bowl
- Italy national soccer (football) team: Their goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon, gave up only two goals as the Azzurri cruised to the World Cup championship and temporarily put off a devastating domestic league match-fixing scandal.
- Pittsburgh Steelers: Just because you're a wild card in the NFL playoffs doesn't necessarily mean you won't get far. Just ask Bill Cowher's squad, as the Stillers went all the way to the Promised Land and won Super Bowl XL.
- Miami Heat: When Shaquille O'Neal came to South Beach in the summer of 2004, he promised that the Heat would win the NBA Finals. Two years later, in spite of a mid-season coaching change, Shaq, Dwayne Wade and the Heat delivered on that promiser, beating the Dallas Mavericks in six games.
- Florida Gators: The Gators won the SEC title for both football and basketball. They won the NCAA Tournament and have a shot at the BCS Championship as well.
As always, write-ins are welcome. As for how you should vote...
- Team of the Year
- Second Best Team of the Year
- Third Best Team of the Year
The winner will be revealed in the AYIR to be published during the holidays. All voting closes December 23.
