What do you think was the best game of 2006?
What do you think was the best game of 2006?

First off, there should be some explanation about this part of the upcoming Armchair Year in Review (and the three weeks thereafter). While I will be picking the top story, game of the year and what-have-you-not, I have decided to let fellow readers and visitors voice their opinions.

The first category to go under the microscope is Game of the Year. As is the case every year, there are many games throughtout the 365 days of the sports calender that receive differing levels of hype beforehand and wind up as a topic for discussion afterwards.

As is custom around these parts, just vote for your top three by leaving a comment in the section below. The format will be as follows:

  1. Best Game of the Year
  2. Second Best Game of the Year
  3. Third Best Game of the Year

The winner will be revealed in the AYIR to be published during the Holidays.

Vote early and often! More categories to come in the weeks ahead!

# 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix (okay not a game, but a sporting event, so I think it kind of fits in. Click the link to read the report.
  • 2006 World Cup Final - France v Italy - Went to penalty shoot-out. Zidane's sending off...
  • World Snooker Championship 2006 - First Round - Nigel Bond beat Stephen Hendry 10-9. Bond led 7-3, and Hendry needed a snooker to win the 11th Frame, which Bond gifted to him. Hendry levelled at 7-7. Match progressed to 9-9. Bond needed black to win match in final frame. Potted black but went in-off. Match went to a re-spotted black (it was tied on points in the final frame). Bond didn't even know Hendry had asked him to break (Hendry won the coin toss). Yet Bond STILL potted the black to win the match having thrown the game away twice. Considering when the two players were at their peaks in the mid-1990s, Hendry beat Bond in four consecutive World Championships (ranging from the Quarter Finals to the Final), it was a great win. Voted the second best snooker match ever.
  • (If you don't allow my first one, put in the Mets game that they lost to St. Louis in the NLCS - the one with Endy Chavez' great catch. Bump the other two up, and put that Mets game up at three.

I must admit, I've really expanded the discussion here. There'll be honorable mentions, as well, in case your top choice didn't get the podium (top three spots).

    1. Michigan @ OSU

    2. Notre Dame vs. Ohio State (Bowl Game) 3. Indians @ Detroit sometime in may, the tribe slaughtered the Tigers and I was there so it was a good game.

Nominations would have been good for this. It's tough to think about aaaaaaalllllll the games played in the last year.

Thanx. I'll remember to put nominees up for the weeks ahead, just to let you think along those lines. But, you are welcome to enter a "write-in" into the fray.

Even as a USC fan, I had to put the Rose Bowl. It was the best game even if I didn't like the result.

Two more nominees for yur consideration:
    1. The Phoenix Suns-New Jersey Nets double-overtime thriller where both teams combined for the fourth most total points in NBA history. Final: Suns 161, Nets 157.
    2. A high school football game in Florida, where St. Thomas Aquinas HS of Fort Lauderdale overcame a 35-point deficit, only to lose to Lakeland 45-42, also in double OT. More on that in the upcoming AWIR...

    2. USC-Texas Rose Bowl

    3. White Sox vs. Astros in July -- Sox down 9-1 entering 7th... they score one in the 7th, Iguchi hits a three-run homer in the 8th, then hits a grand slam with two outs in the ninth to tie the game. Sox lose in extras, but what a game...
