These five athletes are the five possible Future superstars on the sports landscape. Vote for who you think will be the Future superstar on the sports landscape. After a couple of days I will announce a winner.
1. Kevin Durant
Kevin Durant is a 6' 10" small forward with a 7' 4.75" wingspan. Was named the AP player of the year, the first ever Freshman to win the award. Averaged 28.9 points a game in Big 12 play as well as 12.5 rebounds a game. Racked up twenty 30 point games in his first year. Only the second Freshman ever to be asked to USA basketball training camp. (Greg Oden being the other) Many have him going with one of the first two selections in this summers NBA Draft.
2. Delmon Young
In 84 games with Double-A Montgomery, Young hit .336 with 20 homers, 71 RBIs and an OPS of .986 in 2005, winning the Southern League MVP despite playing just over half of the season. Young was promoted to AAA Durham, where he batted .285 with 6 homers and 28 RBIs in 52 games. After the season, Delmon was named Baseball America's Minor League Player of the Year, as well as its #1 overall prospect for the 2006 season. Delmon finished his minor league career with an impressive .317 batting average. He is currently hitting .265 with 7 homers and 37 RBIs.
3. Justin Verlander
Verlander is currently considered one of the premier young pitchers in baseball, and is still only 24 years old. He features a high-90s fastball which has been repeatedly clocked over 100 mph. Verlander also throws a nasty curve, and a plus changeup. In 2006, he became the first rookie pitcher in the history of the game to win 10 games before the end of June. As the fifth starter on an already strong pitching staff, his numbers have been in considerable excess to the average statistics of other rookie pitchers throughout history. He was named American League Rookie of the Year for the 2006 season. He currently has an ERA of 2.79 with a record of 7-2. He threw his first career no hitter on Tuesday, and was clocked at 102 mph in the ninth inning.
4. Calvin Johnson
At only 21 years of age, Johnson was taken second overall by the Detroit Lions in this Years NFL Draft. Johnson's sophomore year, he earned first-team All-American honors, as well as All-ACC honors for the 2nd straight year and was semifinalist for the Fred Biletnikoff Award. (Nations Top Reciever) He led Tech with 54 catches for 888 yards and six scores. During his Junior Season Johnson was ACC Player of the Year and made his 3rd straight selection to All-ACC squad. (He finished 10th in Heisman voting) Johnson tallied 1,202 yards on 76 catches. Johnson's 15 touchdowns in 2006 is a new Georgia Tech single-season record.
5. Greg Oden
Oden stands at 7'0" and weighs in at 280 pounds. As a high school senior, he led Lawrence North to an undefeated record, a third straight Class 4A Indiana state championship and the first ever player to finish for an Indiana school in USA Today's Super 25 rankings. For the season, Oden scored 22.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game while shooting at 74 percent clip from the field. As of March 14, 2007, Oden has averaged 15.5 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game. Was voted onto the AP All American Team. (Along with Durant, were the first to Freshmen ever selected)
