The first of the last two categories deals with those who never got a great deal of face time until this year. We're talking about the fresh faces of 2006. Who's your pick to click?
Some nominees:
- Greg Oden, THE Ohio State University: Former Indiana high school standout got double double in his Buckeye debut.
- Ryan Howard, Philadelphia Phillies: Phils' first baseman clubbed 58 homers during 2006 season.
- Cam Ward, Carolina Hurricanes: Martin Gerber's understudy kicked butt and took names for the Stanley Cup champs during the first playoffs since the lockout.
- Joakim Noah, University of Florida: Son of tennis legend Yannick Noah was Most Outstanding Player in Final Four win over the University of Connecticut.
- University at Albany men's basketball team: Made national TV debut in BracketBusters loss to Virginia Commonwealth University, only to return in the NCAA tournament's first round. They lost to the Huskies, but not before putting a scare into them.
- George Mason University men's basketball team: They're already nominated for several other categories due to their tourney run, so why not?
- Tony Romo: From NCAA Division II QB to bench-warmer to Cowboys starter in just a few years.
- Jay Cutler, Denver Broncos: Former Vanderbilt University standout takes reins from Jake Plummer and while he didn't get off to a hot start, his 261 yards passing and two scores got him noticed.
As always, write-ins are welcome. As for how you should vote...
- Fresh Face of the Year
- Second Best Fresh Face of the Year
- Third Best Fresh Face of the Year
The winner will be revealed in the AYIR to be published during the holidays. All voting closes Saturday.
Last up: MVP of the Year (The biggest of the big!)
