This next category concerns those who are the real captains of the teams – the coaches.
Some nominees for your consideration:
- Billy Donovan: Head coach of the NCAA Men's Basketball champion University of Florida Gators.
- Jim Larranaga: Head coach of the George Mason University Patriots, who had the most surprising Cinderella run to date.
- Eric Mangini: First-year head coach of the New York Jets led Gang Green to a (potential) playoff berth in his first year at the helm of Gang Green. Not bad, for a beginner...
- Marcelo Lippi: Manager of the 2006 World Cup champion Italian squad, Lippi was blessed with talent and goals all around, as well as tantalizingly-great goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon
- Greg Schiano: Led the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights to a 9-3 season capped by an upset over the University of Louisville Cardinals.
- Pat Riley: Finally got his championship parade down Miami's Biscayne Boulevard as the Miami Heat dispatched the Dallas Mavericks in six games.
- Jim Leyland: Veteran skipper pulled the Good Ship Detroit Tigers to the AL wild card and the World Series.
- Willie Randolph: Ex-Yankee 3rd baseman and 3rd base coach got the New York Mets to within an eyelash of the World Series.
- Sean Payton: Another first-timer, this one with the New Orleans Saints, leads team to NFC South crown
- Frank Rijkaard: Manager of UEFA Champion FC Barcelona
- José Mourinho: Manager led Chelsea to back-to-back Premiership titles
As always, write-ins are welcome. As for how you should vote...

The winner will be revealed in the AYIR to be published during the holidays. All voting closes December 23.
On deck: Fresh Face of the Year (Upset of the Year was excluded as there was insufficient voting; mea culpa [Latin for "my bad"])
