ArmchairGM User published in USA Today!

by user Cshimkin

Honk Honk,

ArmchairGM user Carl Shimkin was published in USA Today Online 7/13/06 for his Father/Son List. His contribution is part of their article on Gary Matthews Jr. Shimkin has put together the most comprehensive list of children of present and ex-Major Leaguers playing in the Minor Leagues today. There are over 70 names on the list grouped into common thread categories. There are also some other interesting family blood lines included on this List For The Ages.

Personal Note

I despise doing my own PR, but I think this is apropos since the goal of this site for many of us is to segue into professional journalism. And forgive me if I sound like Don King, my intention is to boost the confidence of the many talented writers we have on this site. With enough persistence Armchair is just an arm's length away from the national media, even though a lot of the stuff on Armchair in my opinion is better!

To view the article just look in the left column under the subsection BASEBALL'S FAMILY TREE. You'll see a brief description of me and a link to my article and list. Here's the link to the USA Today article:

The thing that makes this site better than a newspaper, is that we don't have to worry about things such as "political correctness", and if we disagree with something we are free to do so. It would be edited out of newspapers. Congratulations on your successes!

While I agree, this was your blog, not armchair, i think that these types of endorsement from national media may give us an opportunity to provide our own opinions on a widely viewed scale. The national media sees bloggers as first hand viewers of info and readers of their info...

The interesting thing is that I had this same list mentioned on DeadSpin.com about three weeks ago and my traffic was twice as much as from USA Today. It seems to me that more Online users are reading independent sites these days more than the print medias who have sites. I strongly believe that the future of sports journalism is changing rapidly from the accepted media outlets that are more inflexible and might be growing stagnant. I agree with Alex, readers and users want more freedom than most newspapers allow.
