ArmchairGM User Ad Campaign

by user Pean

In light of the recent talk about getting more users, I thought we could do something similar to what Mozilla is doing with FireFox. Since funds are low, They are having a contest asking people to create 30 second video ads in order to spread their open source web browser.

http://www.firefoxflicks.com/brief/brief.html

They are definitely going to get a ton of high quality results. Granted, they have 60 million users, and we have, um less than that, I figured it will be fun to try. Anyway, since video might be too difficult (if anyone can, definitely go ahead), lets create some regular image ads. There are definitely some funny people on this site so far. Ridiculously photoshopped images are more than welcome. The more crude, the better. I like to try to make fun of ESPN.com.

Here is my first quick attempt.

Yeahm lets tick off Disney. They are only a Fortune 500 Company with tons of cash for lawyers to shut down this site. Suvery says. . . .this ad doesn't fly.

What kind of reputation do you want for this site. A classy one that is long lasting, or a punkish, fly by night operation. Remember, once the reputation is gained, it is very hard to change.

I am just saying: we are only 550+ user strong right now. And you want to go and mock a multi-billion dollar corporation. There is a time to mock and a time to build. We are in the latter situation currently.

Actually I think Christof has a point. In those old advertisements for colas, you never saw Coke or Pepsi saying the other one sucked, you only saw them saying that people preferred one or the other. This is to avoid libel and slander suits.

I agree that ESPN stinks. But to put up an armchairGM logo and espn.com stinks line on the bottom, and have the ESPN log sandwiched in-between, you are just asking the lawyers from Bristol to nail you on a lawsuit involving libel and trademark violations. Funny as it may be, the risks associated with it is too great.

So Television networks can sue critics who say their shows are bad? What a crappy legal system!

A good lawyer will throw everything at you. It may not ultimately stick, but it will be thrown at you.

I don't think ESPN would even notice until the site got big and already had a reputation. They probably wouldn't even care until the site was big. If they did start to care it'd only make the site bigger. Bad publicity is still good publicity. But in general I don't think the slogan "ESPN stinks" would actually work to attract anymore users.

If I had any artistic talent I'd give it a shot...but a stick figure is pretty much the extent of my drawing ability.
