ArmchairGM Hall of Fame Proposal

18
Vote

by user Alex Holowczak

I think it would be a good idea for ArmchairGm to have its' own Hall of Fame for sports stars, in order to honour those that have been popular or successful over the years. It should not be a copy of the Baseball Hall of Fame, the Football Hall of Fame, etc.

It would need separate sections for different sports, e.g. Cricket, Snooker, MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, Soccer, Auto Racing, Golf, Tennis, Athletics, Swimming, Rugby, etc.

I think that players, coaches (managers), referees (umpires), and commentators (announcers or presenters) should be allowed in…

I think players' inception to the Hall should have the following criteria:

  1. The player has been active for 5 years. He need not have retired.
  2. The player has represented his country, or played in an All-Star game.
  3. The player has been a fan favourite throughout his career.
  4. The player has shown compassion for his sport throughout his career.
  5. The player has shown loyalty to his club or franchise, or showed loyalty to the game.
  6. The player has shown great sportsmanship throughout his career.
  7. The player has to have been an MVP, World Champion or World Number 1, or has been at a club or franchise that has won the major trophies of that sport.

A player has to fulfil No. 1 on the list. If a player scores 4/6 on the other criteria, he/she should be let in.

I think coaches' inception should be based upon the following criteria:

  1. The coach has been active for 5 years. He need not have retired.
  2. The coach has coached his country, or coached in an All-Star game.
  3. The coach has been a fan favourite throughout his career.
  4. The coach has shown compassion for his sport throughout his career.
  5. The coach has shown loyalty to his club or franchise, or showed loyalty to the game.
  6. The coach has shown great sportsmanship throughout his career.
  7. The coach has to have coached the MVP, World Champion or World Number 1, or has been at a club or franchise that has won the major trophies of that sport.

A coach has to fulfil No. 1 on the list. If a coach scores 4/6 on the other criteria, he/she should be let in.

I think referees' inception should be based upon the following criteria:

  1. The referee has been active for 5 years. He need not have retired.
  2. The referee has refereed international matches, or refereed an All-Star game.
  3. The referee has been a fan favourite throughout his career.
  4. The referee has shown compassion for his sport throughout his career.
  5. The referee has shown loyalty to the game.
  6. The referee has a reputation of quality decision making.
  7. The referee has to have refereed games between the top teams and players in his sport.

A referee has to fulfil No. 1 on the list. If a referee scores 4/6 on the other criteria, he/she should be let in.

I think commentators' inception should be based upon the following criteria:

  1. The commentator has been active for 5 years. He need not have retired.
  2. The commentator has commentated international matches, or commentated on an All-Star game.
  3. The commentator has been a fan favourite throughout his career.
  4. The commentator has shown compassion for his sport throughout his career.
  5. The commentator has shown loyalty to the game.
  6. The commentator has a high reputation.
  7. The commentator has to have commentated on games between the top teams and players in his sport.

A commentator has to fulfil No. 1 on the list. If a commentator scores 4/6 on the other criteria, he/she should be let in.

Each player would have to be "voted" for by the armchairgm readers. They would need to take a player up for nomination, and see how many of the criteria they think they fulfill. Should the average be >=4/6, they would be incepted.

Any other type of sports profession that you can think of? Like the idea?

I agree with the idea, but some of the criteria is a little difficult. FOr example, Barry Sanders played 9 years, and really didn't have that much loayalty for the game (He left early and many fault him for that) He has no championships as well. Perhaps instead of meeting this criteria it should be on a case by case basis. I really like the idea and you have some great criteria to guage, but to have a hard line is difficult. we should just take the sportswriters approach and vote in as we deem appropriate.

I think it should have some sort of hard-line criteria, that way only the best will get in it. I forgot about some football players walking out, so perhaps it should be reduced to eight years. That way, Sanders would have the 4/6 (surely) from the other categories. I will make one or two changes based upon that...

i would absolutely vote barry sanders in. I believe any hall of fame should only include dominant players. I'd rather see someone like barry sanders go in over someone who just put up 'good' numbers for a longer period of time.

I think the idea is terrific. We the fans would pick a better Hall than sports writers anyway.

I think ArmChairGM should get all of the Hall of Fame pages done for the already existing HOF's. Thereafter, we may think about doing our own.

I agree we need or own HOF, but I think we need our own AGM twist to it. Not to steal ideas, but a year or two ago The Sports Guy on ESPN.com came up with the idea to have the HOFs be shaped like a pyramid with the absolute greatest at the top (Ruth, Gehrig, Ted Williams, etc..) and then have it descend all the way down to marginal Hallers. I think he used something like 5 levels. I'm not saying we should steal his exact idea, but I think it would be fun to make ours different.

I do think we should set perimeters for each sport via #s. Like the # of players we vote in per sport, per time period. I.E. there should be a lower number of basketball players because teams are smaller, whereas football would be higher since the teams are much larger.

I'd just like to say though. Alex this is a really good idea. If ever we wanted to take control of our sports world, this is a great step towards that.

One more thing. Sorry to keep posting but... There's no way I should be able to vote on things like snooker or rugby, I have no idea. Then again, and I'll use Alex as an example (Please take no offense). Lets say alex doesn't know anything about American football, he shouldn't be able to have a lot of voting power because, odds are, his vote would be mostly on states, even though a guy like, Lynn Swann, who has poor stats, may be worthy of a bid (Hypothetically, these are just examples)

I thought about that... Perhaps if someone thought of a player to go up for nomination, they could write a persuasive article, explaining who he was, what he did, what his reputation was like. An example... Snooker Player called Joe Davis. If I said he was World Champion 15 times, he fits 1 (he played at least 15 years), and 7 with that stat. With No. 2, that didn't exist so he couldn't. 3, he was a punter's favourite, and was popular. 4, he practically invented the sport!! 5, same idea, he played it for 40 years, promoted first ever World Championships, asked BA&CC to organise it. 6, he plays snooker, and most snooker players are sporting. So he gets 5/6 and walks into the Hall. If someone wrote a piece about players, and say every month posted a collection of these pieces ready to be voted on, then everybody would know who they were voting for. With snooker players, there can be a link to the player's profile, which practically explains most of that stuff. To start however, it might be better to go through each sport in turn to pick out initial members. As for voting power, in an election, a clueless person's vote counts as much as Tony Blair's, so you can't really say that. And we're not going to turn to facism, where one person decides everything! In the articles, it should be up to the person that feels he should be in the Hall to persuade the others why he should be in.

if we do this, we have to first vote on the rules ourselves (we can't just use Alex's proposal, bc users may not agree with all his rules)

There's an entire section of it on the home page... Feel free to look at it. What's wrong with snooker? It's arguably the second biggest TV sport in Britain.

I like the idea of an Armchair GM HOF, but I don't like the idea of having strict guidelines for it. Who is and who isn't a great player is a very subjective thing. The debating about who gets in is one of the best parts of the hall. If you just say that anyone who meets this criteria gets considered, everyone else doesn't then that ruins the fun of it. I really love the idea that Chaci mentioned. I think you need to be an ESPN insider to read the column now, but the Sports Guy's idea of a HOF pyramid was brilliant.

I agree, except for the 7th criteria for players. Some of the game's best have failed to win a chamionship. Think of all the great players the Red Sox had during the decades they failed to win the World Series. Think about someone like Ivan Rodriguez. Is he really less deserving of nomination than Juan Gonzelez, Chuck Knoblauch or Paul Konerko? Think about some of the greats of our day who have not won a championship or gotten MVP because of other outstanding players. I don't think it's fair to limit nomination of a player because he either didn't win a championship in a team sport, or didn't win something as limited and biased as an MVP vote.

That was why you only needed 4/6 of the criteria to get in. But if you follow the trend about having a debate about a player, and not having criteria, then it doesn't really matter.
