ArmchairGM Hall of Fame NBA Polls Are Open!

AGM NBA Hall of Fame Poll: PG SG SF PF C Coaches Pioneers

The ArmchairGM NBA Hall of Fame polls are now open! Rank the top 10 players at each position; if you don't have/can't think of a top 10, list as many between 5 and 10 as you want. Each individual poll can be accessed using the navigator at the top of this screen. Alternately, users can go to the "Community Portal" section of the site and vote there.

  • When determining positions (particularly SG vs. SF), try to list players at their most predominant position during their career. If a player played before today's specialization of positions, pick which one you think would best fit their playing style -- for players listed at multiple positions, the total number of votes will be added across positions (just don't vote for the same player twice).

Are we sure we want to use this method to choose Hall of Famers? Very few people voted for the NFL one, and now we have some players in the "ArmchairGM Hall of Fame", yet when we look at the votes, we see in some cases only 1 or 2 people voted. Its kind of a drastic move permanently voting people into something called the "ArmchairGM Hall of Fame", when it may end up being in the hands of 1 or 2 people. what does everyone else think?

That's a good point. Maybe we should agressively market the AGM Hall of Fame on the main page, so that more people will be inclined to vote. The AGM Voting Committee has been a success, mainly because many users have participated; if the MLB, NFL, and NBA Halls of Fame has similar voter turnout, the results could be much more credible.

i think he makes a good point. i also think theres a difference between the AGM Voting Committee and this bc in this case we are actually calling the end result "the AtmchairGM Hall of Fame" as if the entire AGM community participated in it. So it's kinda weird to induct someone into the Hall of Fame, and then a year from now when we have lets say 10,000 registerd users, we have this guy in the Hall of Fame as a result of 15 voters. Those are my concerns, I just dont know how we should deal with that, any thoughts?

There were several concerns raised about the voting before, but they went ignored.

Maybe we should resuscitate the voting for each Hall on a regular basis, allowing people who didn't vote or weren't registered at the time to have their chance. I still think a highly-visible link on the main page (with Dr. Patriot's logo) could attract a lot of voters, but you're right, only 15 people (at most) usually vote on these things anyway.

I don't think the "Armchair GM Hall of Fame" should be static, either, as though "we decided in September 2006 that these were the hall-of-famers and that's it". Perhaps we should cycle the voting as open or closed every few months, for instance, to both capture new voters and account for the fact that new accomplishments must be accounted for in the voting. I don't think players should be able to fall out of the Hall, though, so some arbitrary number of players wouldn't be fair, either. Maybe the criteria should be very narrow at first (i.e., only the best get in at the beginning), and then broaden as more voters get involved.

Per-position voting may not be the optimal way. In doing my Top 10's for this poll, I left off deserving players at some positions, but found myself scrambling for worthy candidates to fill out the top 10 at other positions. Maybe we should all list our Top 100 of All Time, regardless of position, and give out points based on that.

Sorry about the lengthy comment, but the more I think about it, the more I see the flaws in the current method. Other suggestions would be appreciated...

See Dr. Patriots original article. There were at least a handful of suggestions on how to do it other ways. But the Dr. went ahead and operated without any changes.

I am a cpcp: Not to hijack the thread, but no one on the original thread specifically said that the way I present was specifically a bad idea. I took this as a sign to go ahead with it, and I think it worked out pretty well, especially because of the number of options we have at this point - we can go ahead and use anyone else's ideas from this point, and now we have a solid player base for the NFL Hall of Fame.

To get back on topic: as for the NBA Hall of Fame, the problem with only a few people voting for a position will not be present because there are only 7 places to vote. Positions like offensive guard for the NFL had less voters because they aren't really any well-known players at these positions; though I don't really know that much about the NBA, I can only assume that this is true due to the small number of positions and the substantially long history of the NBA.

Davis21wylie: I like your ideas in your lowest post. My goal with the Top 5's for football was to simply set up an initial group of Hall of Fame inductees and then expand afterward. I made a few suggestions for methods of doing so in the update thread, but no one has expressed agreement or disagreement with these ideas so I'm not quite sure where to go.

Sorry, one thing I forgot: the NFL and MLB Hall of Fame polls are both linked in the Community Portal page, which is as close to the Main page as I could get without administrator help. Perhaps an administrator could give us a hand here and allow us to put something on the front page.

Anybody who doesn't vote Bill Russell #1 or #2 as the All-Time center forfeits any voting rights, and probably has either been abducted by aliens or forced to vote after being tied to a tree, smeared in honey, and visited by 200,000 red ants. 'Nuff said.

I guess that means I deserve all of those things... So when do you want to perform this ritual? Can you wait until after the aliens return with me?

I don't think it should be by position. Only the best of the best should get in, and doing it by position means there are as many kickers as there are QBs, to give an NFL example. I think that each user should vote their top 10 of all time and the 20 players most mentioned should get in.

Plus with the NBA, players aren't really defined by their positions, or at least less so than the other sports.
