ArmChairGM Challenge: Obtaining Press Passes for Sports Events?

14
Vote

by user Christof

Hey Folks. ArmChairGM.com is still in its infancy. We are closing in to 800 users, 16,000 pages, and roughly 2,500 unique hits a day. The next challenge, besides 1,000 users and 20,000 pages, is to obtain press passes.

Yes, my friends, I believe ArmChairGM users should petition for press passes for sporting events. My question the becomes:

Should there be official ArmChairGM.com policy in regards to supporting users in obtaining press passes?

If yes, what should the criteria be to obtain support from ACGM?

I am now opening it up for thoughts and opinions from the community on this matter.

I would love to do that, I have been in talks and gotten some positive feedback in regards to obtaining press passes for University of Virginia events. Id love to work with ArmchairGM in order to give me more backing in that regard and help the site out also. We just need to figure out an official process for user to become a member of that part of the Armchairgm family.

I was able to get press passes to an Ohio State game when I was editor for my college newspaper. As long as you can present legitmate credentials, it's not all that difficult. The thing is, depending on where you get the passes to, it can be kind of boring. For instance, at the OSU game, I couldn't go down on the field until the 4th quarter, I was up in the press box which isn't a fantastic place to be. While it was free tickets to a Buckeyes game, I had to be quiet and listen to a bunch of fat sports reporters talk about what high school games they covered the night before. Of course the free food was good. I was also able to go to the post-game press conference. My photographer was on the field the whole game.

Yeah, same here, I've had press passes to Georgia Tech games through the Technique. It's kind of boring -- you can't do things like talk, cheer, approach Gary Thorne at halftime, etc. The food is a plus, though, as are press conferences. Some of the AJC reporters needed me to tell them who the players were because they couldn't tell them apart without their jerseys on!

Haha! They were wearing their uniform pants and underarmor, but not the jerseys. Just clearing that up.

It would all be based upon authenticity of coverage. If there is someone on this site (a founder maybe) or someone with legal or creative knowledge that could draft an official ArmchairGM letterhead, complete with an official address, phone number, and contact information that can be checked by the team/event source. Also, a fax number would be helpful to send an "official letter". In the letter it would be helpful to say something along the lines of number of site hits, number of readers, and number of writers. Just any pertinent information to show that the site reaches the public and is a viable source of sports information.

If we can get press passes, I would love to cover the Reno National Championship Air Races for ArmchairGM.

Thank you! Press Credentials... I've been thinking about this very idea for almost two years... the Super Bowl is coming to Arizona... I will gladly cover the Super Bowl (the Mac Daddy of Press events) at beautiful Cardinals stadium in nearby Glendale, Arizona... We just need a good plan of attack, but I'm gonna just start calling organizations and seeing what can/can't be done. All pro sports franchises have people to deal with any request we'd have for them. The better/smarter we are at approaching the matter, the more legitimate (not just street) respect ArmchairGM.com can gain...

I have also been contemplating sending formatted yet odd e-mail interview questionnaires to all kinds of 'famous' people (or in this case, people in sports) and just seeing who returns any answers...

I'll be working for the Cardinals Radio network this fall, the deal is if I work all the Cardinals games, then I get a pass for the Superbowl. Hopefully I'll be able to do that, and hopefully will have a press pass and give the site an on-the-field encounter of the big game.

Give me your email (email it to me from my user page) and I'll forward you the email about the details. You could probably get in on the same deal as me.
