Arena Out, Who's In?

The New York Red Bulls have announced that they have parted ways with this past season's head coach Bruce Arena.  Many fans will remember Arena as the man who built D.C. United into Major League Soccer's most dominant team early in the league's history.  He was also the most successful coach in the history of US Soccer, guiding the 2002 squad into the quarter-finals against eventual runners-up Germany.  The parting of company was reported to be "by mutual consent."

This move comes right on the heels of the Red Bulls elimination from this year's MLS Cup.  New York was eliminated by the New England Revolution when after a goalless draw at Giants Stadium, the Revs' Taylor Twellman scored the only goal in the second leg at Gillette Stadium.  Arena's overall record with New York was 16 wins, 16 losses and 10 draws.  That record certainly did not do enough to impress the Red Bull owners of the club, so Bruce is now history.

The Red Bulls anounced that they were going on a worldwide hunt to find a replacement for Arena.  One very interesting name has come to the surface as the possible replacement, Fabio Capello.  For those not familiar with Capello he has coached some very big clubs including AS Roma, Juventus, A.C. Milan and most recently Real Madrid.  Capello works now as a commentator for an Italian network and told Italy's Gazetta Dello Sport that he had been contacted by the United States but would not go into any further detail.

If Red Bull do lure Capello that would be huge for the club.  He has been very successful at the very highest levels of the sport.  He may be the one to lead the Red Bulls out of mediocrity and into the promised land of winning MLS Cup.

What the hell? Wasn't Arena coming to MLS to help continue building up the league? Not that he's the world's premier manager or anything like that, but whatever happened to a little bit of stability? I don't know if Arena quit or the Red Bulls wanted him gone, but has to be judged as a PR negative for the team and the league.

From the stuff I have read on the departure of Arena I get the sense that the club was forcing him out. Of course, no one will admit to it.

RBNY people basically said Arena wasn't getting the job done, as you said, they basically booted him.

There is something worng with Arena...I'm not sure what but there must be something up with him with the way he keeps leaving jobs. Is he the Larry Brown of American Soccer: over-rated, job-hopper?

Bruce really isn't much of a job hopper. Arena was the US National Team coach for eight years (it's very unusual for anyone to coach in two WC cycles), and the University of Virginia for 17. Even still, it's not that uncommon for coaches to jump around a lot in soccer. The Alex Fergusons and Arsene Wegners are more the exception than the rule. The Red Bulls though are very quick to get rid of head coaches; Bruce was their 10th head coach in team history!

Jabba The Bruce is gone. Seriously, RBNY would be a piss poor club with Mourinho running things.

It would be very interesting if the MLS got such a high profile manager. He might be able to attract som European talent that isn't over the hill...sorry Becks.

Becks isn't over the hill, jesus! He and RVN helped win Real another trophy last summer. Problem is he played a full season than came here and kept playing despite receiving injections that only make things worse. I think Capello could come to the MLS. I never liked Arena for some reason.

Becks is way over the hill regardless of what his last team achieved. What did Real do the other 4 seasons there...Oh yeah, they went through one of the biggest trophy droughts of their history. You may wish to mention his last 3 England apperances against that really stiff competition in Macedonia, Estonia and Isrel. (note sarcasm) He's nowhere near the player he was and the only reason Mclaren keeps picking him is so he can get his 100 caps. Shaun Wright Phillips is miles better than Becks and DB is not worth the 1st class plane ticket.
