Are the Yankees in deep trouble?

by Pfiore03

I've not posted a topic in months or even been here. I've had my reasons but tonight is fitting because you see tonight is Halloween 2007. The Yankees have decided to screw Joe Torre by having him take a pay cut and name Joe Girardi his heir apparent. Then free agents- C: Jorge Posada, RHP: Mariano Rivera, LHP: Andy Pettitte, RF: Bobby Abreu and NOW 3B- Alex Rodriguez*. You ask yourself as a Yankee fan, besides A-Rod not coming back, who will return for the 2008 seasons and beyond? The sure thing is that the Yankees need to focus on bringing the main three back- Posada, Rivera, and Pettitte. That really is the key. You'll probably think that's stupid because Posada only had that season in a contract year and Mo isn't that great of a pitcher. Well then what options do the Yankees have. There are still many questions to answer on the part of Hank Steinbrenner and company.

This is the 2008 Lineup right now (without signing Posada and Rivera)-

  • C- Jose Molina
  • 1B- Jason Giambi
  • 2B- Robinson Cano
  • SS- Derek Jeter
  • 3B- Andy Phillips or Wilson Betemit
  • RF- Bobby Abreu (we'll probably sign him)
  • CF- Melky Cabrera
  • LF- Johnny Damon
  • DH- Hideki Matsui

This may sound nuts but there isn't a third base on the free agent market unless we trade Cabrera and Hughes to get someone. The choices I've heard are Miguel Cabrera (Florida Marlins), and Hank Blalock (Texas Rangers). But we risk Johnny Damon not playing well in center again. So did the Yankees do the right thing by saying that if A-Rod opts out (prior to him saying it on Game 4 of the World Series) the Yankees won't persue him. I severly doubt that. You mean you'll trust Andy Phillips or Wilson Betemit to play third base or sign a free agent.

The Yankees catching issue needs to be addressed. Jose Molina isn't a starting catcher. Mainly all the Yankees good starting catching prospects are in Single-A or lower. It'll take at least 3 years to develop them if not sooner (depends on progress). The Yankees really should've kept Navarro; I know he sucks now but at least he would've been called up when Posada would've became a free agent. I thought Navarro would've been good but I guess I was wrong about that.

Mariano Rivera- He's the key to the development of Joba Chamberlain in the future. He needs to stay for at least 2 seasons. I know J.B. Cox would've been the successor to Mo but I doubt he'll be ready by the time 2009 is around. If we lose Mo, Joba's development has a reliever could be in serious trouble. Besides, I think I'd rather see Joba in the 'pen then in the rotation. I know was having my doubts because of the adjustment he would have to make but now think of what he would have to do. Joba is better off in the bullpen because he would be the closer. If he were a starter, I think there would be more pressure on him to be the best in baseball (if you see what I mean by that statement).

The coaching staff- With Joe Torre now gone and Don Mattingly joining him, don't be surprised if Guidry, Long and the other coaches leave. I expect Girardi to name his staff which includes Dave Eiland. This is if Guidry leaves because of Torre leaving.

Are the Yankees in deep trouble? Not yet but if they don't sign Mo and Posada, they easily could be and be forced to be on a rebuilding trend. The Yankees don't want that just yet considering that Girardi was named manager and does have a lot to prove.

  • Note: This doesn't include minor league free agents and the other 1-year contract free agents like Doug Mientkiewicz.

This is what I really don't get with so many Yankee fans. Is the goal to simply make the playoffs or win the World Series?

Two questions:
  1. What are the Yankees going to do with the $60 million they'll have over the next three years from A-Rod walking? And the untold millions from Rivera, Pettitte, Clemens, Posada, Torre etc. You have it going nowhere.
  2. Why is trading Hughes and Melky a problem? Couldn't the Yankees trade for/sign a 1B, move Giambi to DH, Matsui to LF, and trade/sign a CF, thereby mitigating the harm done?

Here's my potential plan:

  • Trade Damon and cash to CHW for Joe Crede
  • Trade Kei Igawa to SD for Morgan Ensberg
  • Platoon those guys
  • Sign Torii Hunter (or Andrew Jones)
  • Re-sign Rivera and Posada

Or something of that ilk. You don't even need Pettitte, because you have Joba/Wang/Kennedy/Hughes/Mussina.

Doesn't that solve the problem, pretty simply?

Umm, nope.
  • Joe Crede is Ozzie Guillen's favorite player. He's not going anywhere. And the Chisox don't need Damon anyway.
  • Morgan Ensberg was DFA'd by Houston, and likely will be again, if the Yanks want him just wait til he hits waivers. Igawa sucks, no one wants him.
  • I'll take Hunter, depending on $$. I wouldn't take Andruw if he agreed to play just for his meal money.
  • Agree, and agree.
  • Pettitte isn't a choice, because the option he has is a player's option. Andy decides if he plays next year.

DNL please read this- "Why is trading Hughes and Melky a problem?" and "Joba/Wang/Kennedy/Hughes/Mussina" Now how is that going to be possible if Hughes gets traded. You would have Joba/Wang/Kennedy/Pettitte and Mussina but wait didn't Joba succeed in the bullpen role and could be the closer in 2009 because Mo is running on fumes at this point and nearest closest thing we have to a closer is J.B. Cox who we drafted out of Texas who is probably 2 to 3 years away. So, is there a little problem if we don't sign Mo, hell YES!!! Unless there is a free agent that I don't know about that close until the 2010 season. Give me a name.

Has for Giambi? The Yankees really need to get rid of him but who's going to take him.

To be honest, DNL I'd rather have Matsui or Giambi has the DH and Damon play LF.

AF#1, please read this. The Yankees have taken one of their top minor league starters and have converted him into a closer, and it's not Joba. Get a user name, do some homework, then come on back and we'll talk.

Joe Nathan might be the best closer in baseball, and he's a FA after next season.

I don't think the Yankees are in trouble, but I do think they may need to spend a year or two "rebuilding" the team. They have great players and will always be competitive...as much as I don't like them.

Looks like Matsui will be the new offensive leader for Yankees since he was second in home runs and RBI's behind A-Rod. Giambi had 14 homers and 38 RBI's in half a season's worth of at bats (254) so could double that if he stays healthy all next season. Betemit had 24 RBI's in 84 at bats while it took Doug Mientkiewicz 186 at bats to get the same 24 RBI's. Betemit between time with Dodgers and Yankees had 14 homers and 50 RBI's in 240 at bats which is better numbers than Giambi had in 254 at bats.

One thing for sure...seriously doubt we will see Roger Clemens in a Yankee uniform again in 2008...those days are over...think Clemens is done...he has nothing left to prove to anyone and doubt if any team will pay him what Yankees paid him last summer to pitch the last four months of the season.

Ensberg has had one good season in 2005 when he hit 36 home runs and drove in 101 runs...his next best season was 2003 when he had 25 homers and 60 RBI's. His .224 average with Padres was his lowest average ever. Would say you could stick a fork in Ensberg that he is done but if I write that he will be MVP in 2008.

Pfiore made a good point...back in May it looked like Yankees were done for but the Steinbrenners probably didn't give Torre credit for guiding them through that horrific slump. Instead they focused on the playoff losses when they did good to even get to the playoffs. I never count the Yankees out in May no matter how bad they are playing...they have a way of coming back by end of the season.

I think the Yankees should focus more on getting Posada and Mariano than anything else. They've already lost Torre and A-Rod, and that's bad enough.

Also, NO MORE OFFENSE. Just look at the lineup in that article without A-Rod and Posada. That's a pretty good offensive lineup right there. Focus on getting some starting pitching. Get Pettitte back maybe, and get another pitcher with some sort of experience. Using a lot of young pitchers with Pettite and Clemens didn't work last year, so sign someone, preferably someone with more than a couple of years of experience. Matt Clement, Freddy Garcia, Josh Fogg maybe.

And also, the Yankees should think about maybe getting an extra reliever. He doesn't have to be closer material; just someone to use as a backup if Rivera or Joba aren't doing so hot or if one of them gets injured. Octavio Dotel, Francisco Cordero (hell, if you get him, you might not even need Rivera), Scott Linebrink, etc.

I too would love to see Giambi at least try to beat that shift. Before he was a Yankee he went the other way all the time.Did he forget how to hit?? I'm so sick of seeing him get thrown out from right field. For everytime he beats the shift they get him out 5 times, thetefore the shift remains.Maybe Giardi can talk some sense in to him.
