- John Thompson becomes the first black coach to lead his team to an NCAA college basketball championship.

- The NCAA Rules Committee adopted the 45-second shot clock for men’s basketball to begin in the 1986 season.

- Paul Coffey of the Edmonton Oilers scored his 47th and 48th goals of the season setting an NHL record for most goals by a defenseman. Bobby Orr previously held the record with 46 goals in 1974-75.

- Alex Rodriguez of the Texas Rangers became the youngest player to hit 300 home runs. He beat Jimmie Foxx's record by 79 days.
