- The Boston Bruins defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs to win the 1938-39 Stanley Cup. It was the first time the best-of-seven series was used. The final series had been a best-of-five in previous years.

- Bob Feller became the first pitcher to throw a no hit, no run game on an opening day of the MLB. The Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago White Sox 1-0.
