Appalachian State Over Michigan or a 16 Over a 1?

I’m back! Man, it feels so good to be alive again and pecking away at these keys…Gosh, my little sticky fingers have missed you guys! For anybody that gives a hoot as to where my spits & spats have been at for the last few weeks, I’ll give you the 411. It’s turns out I fell into a deep coma…Last thing I remember was John Madden saying the words "BOOM and "SLOBBERKNOCKER" for the 900 th time as I sat on my rump shaker playing Madden ’08 for the umpteenth time. The combination of overplaying and watching preseason football, well, it was just too much for my body to handle and just shut down. Although while I was sawing logs over these last few weeks, I must say comas have a weird affect on your dreams.

While I was away in comatoastville, my mind was playing tricks on me. Before I fell into Lala land I could’ve sworn Michael Vick plead not guilty to the charges he faced…Unfortunately things aren’t always as they seem in a coma. In there he plead guilty given the fact that all his hommies dimmed him out and he couldn’t escape the justice system like it was some collapsing pocket! Boy, now those are the kind of friends we all need…When the going gets tough, they chirp like a prison canary, (of course no pun intended, or do I mean pun intended? The coma effects still lingers.)

I’m telling anybody that wants to listen, comas do strange things to your medulla oblongata! During my best rest in peace impression, for some strange reason, Charlie Weis was trying to run his spread offensive with three different quarterbacks…Clearly, this was a nightmare I was having. Yeah, it was…Just one that came true last Saturday. So life after Brady looks grim & blue just judging from what Georgia Tech did in South Bend. What, Rudy wasn’t available to line up behind center and take a couple snaps too? Everybody else was. I knew I should of went to Vegas with what I knew…Damn it all to hell! That, and oh yeah…The Appalachian State – Michigan upset! Yes, that was compliments of the coma as well…I saw it happen in the coma too. However, the blockhead who was trying to return the blocked field goal for a touchdown…Who thought for some reason he needed too, didn’t get tackled by the kicker. See now sonny…If you would’ve just fallen on the ball, you wouldn’t be in the Kevin Federline classification now, would you?

Appalachian State showed many things with their upset in The Big House! One thing that’s apparent and yes I’m going to beat this horse so early in the year…Is after this past Saturday, some kind of playoff system is a must! When given the opportunity anybody can compete with anybody…Case and point, "Michigan Who?"! ASU didn’t get the Email that they were suppose to just go to Ann Arbor to collect a paycheck and not actually play football…Isn’t that interesting? Paychecks…That’s all the BCS is about too! Although if ASU showed they could beat Michigan then why couldn’t Boise State beat Florida last year if given the opportunity? For all we know they could’ve, but they just didn’t get the opportunity that the Wolverines gave the Mountaineers! It’s kind of like that whole NCAA Basketball Tournament thingy…Anything can happen in one game.

Speaking of the NCAA Tournament…The Appalachian State – Michigan upset will go down in sports lore. Although how would it stack up to a 16-seed beating a 1-seed? Don’t laugh…Some day it’s bound to happen! Just like the UM Nation laughed at the notion of App. State even being competitive, much less winning the game! Would a 16 over a 1 be a bigger story line than this? Every March the word "Cinderella" gets thrown around left and right…Just goes to show the college football world that if "Cinderella" gets a chance regarding the pigskin what she can do! Only problem is the system doesn’t allow any of hers.

Just some other questions that are worth posing too…What are the odds of both Notre Dame and Michigan entering their game next week both 0-2? Which Budweiser Hot Seat will be hotter…Carr’s or Weis’s?

Vote in LastRowSports.com new Pick’em Poll in honor of football season, which asks a very difficult question and one everybody needs to put that grapes on the table and ask themselves… The all important "Beverage Battle" Some take the Coke & Pepsi Challenge…LastRowSports.com wants you to take the "Beer Challenge"! Will or Lose, no matter what, we still booze…The question is with what? Although this question does come with a warning label! "After making the difficult, monumental selection…One might feel the way Reggie Bush did and Sheldon Brown Knocked him into Tomorrow-Land!" Vote early and often…Just remember, Don’t Click & Type!

In the women's hoops realm, Harvard did beat Stanford in the first round of the NCAA tournament. On the men's side, we know about Princeton giving Georgetown a run, but what about Murray State, led by Popeye Jones, taking top-seeded Michigan State into overtime? I think a 16-over-1 scenario is good conversation fodder in this respect, but since Appy State and Michigan were from different "Division I" divisions, it could be on par with Virginia Union beating Duke in men's basketball at Cameron Indoor.

Or Barton, who won the Division II National Championship on one of the craziest finishes I've ever seen to a basketball game.

true...Although in reality is there really a big difference between a 16 seed who surived there conference tourney to dance and a top notch D-II program? I can speak from experience from the stand point of knowing what a top Division II basketball is...I was part of one. And I can honest say...Not really

I saw this stat online...Division 1-AA teams are 3-5 against Big 10 teams recently, and one of those losses was by one point. Because App State is somewhat easily the best team in 1-AA, I'd say they're probably better than three or four teams in the Big 10. It's certainly a huge victory as far as the media goes because of the 1-AA label and because of how good a program Michigan has been, but on the field, I think it's like Michigan losing to Illinois or something...a huge, huge upset, but probably not an all-time great.

In all of college football Appalachian State is probably on the same level as many bottom dwelling D-IA programs, they just don't have the money or facilities (or possibly desire) to move up. I'd say App State is probably about the 90th to 100th best team in the country. When a 16 seed is up against a 1 seed, it's a top 4 team up against a team that's around 150th to 200th in the country. 16 seeds are always the worst conference champions.

App State is in a separate subdivision, but I-A football is much smaller than D-I basketball.

I'd say the theoretical 16 seed against a 1 seed would be a bigger upset, but that depends on the actual 16 and 1 seed. And also, we have no idea how good or bad Michigan will end up being this year. Will they really be a top 10 team, or a team that barely hangs onto the top 25?

I'd say a #16 over a #1. However, it depends on the strength of the #1 seed. Sometimes you have exceptionally strong top seeds and sometimes you get a #1 seed that could easily have been a #2 or even a #3 seed. If a #16 seed has a great game against one of these team, an upset is certainly possible. Don't forget, often times a #16 seed has had to play its way into the tournament by winning a conference tournament, so they already playing well and emotionally high. Also, while the Michigan upset is certainly huge, we should probably wait a couple of months and get a bit of perspective on it before determining just how big an upset it was. If Michigan ends the year with 4 losses, this upset won't llom quite as large.

It's all been said, but I'll throw in my take anyway. The 16 over a 1 in the Tourney would be way bigger. Everyone is wrapped up in App State being Div 1-AA, but they are two time Div 1-AA champs. They are a GOOD team. A 16 seed likely has a .500 record or worse and only got in by catching lightning in a bottle and winning their conference tourney (over other mediocre to bad teams). Likewise, a 1 seed in the Tourney has proved themselves over the course of the season and has earned that ranking. Michigan, ranked #5 in the preseason rankings, hasn't earned anything yet, and certainly won't finish the year anywhere near the top of the polls.
