I understand the financial reasons, but you'd think they could trade him away for something...

They are going to resign him with a heavy bonus at the front of his contract rather than the tail end, thus allowing the Ravens to avoid a big cap hit.

How so? 8 years in he's at 7k yards. 10k is looked at as the all time great mark. He's got 4 or so years left, and needs 2800 to reach 10k. If he averages 700 yards a season for the rest of his career, he makes the HOF. His worst season he was active for had 900 yards

Lewis is good but he is not a HOF calibur player Im sorry. He had one amazing season, follwed up by 3 average ones. He is very good, but not great. The old standard for total yardage is changing with the 16 game schedule. Hell 1000 yard seasons arent even impressive anymore. The new mark should be 12-1300

i think lewis plays less than four years and runs for less than 700 yards for the years he's around, but even if he pulls that off and god forbid somehow snakes into a pro bowl or something i still don't see him making the hall. he was only considered dominant in one year of his career, and he'll be in line behind a lot of other running backs of the same era.

He's 27 and has had 1 year of less than 1,000 yards in a season, and he got 900. A lot of other RB's? Here are the closest backs to 10,000 entering the 2006-2007 season:
  • EDGERRIN JAMES (9,226)
  • TIKI BARBER (8,787)
  • FRED TAYLOR (8,367)*
  • WARRICK DUNN (8,321)
  • PRIEST HOLMES (8,035)
  • STEPHEN DAVIS (7,875)
  • SHAUN ALEXANDER (7,817)
  • AHMAN GREEN (7,432)*
  • LaDAINIAN TOMLINSON (7,361)
I've struck the names of players that won't reach the 10K mark, and Starred those who have a big question mark about them, mainly age. Lews is just below LT. WHen he reaches the mark, he will likely retire with Dunn, Alexander, and James. I'd put those 3 in ahead of him, then him. He will get in, no doubt.

AFL? He would be the worst player in the league? The AFL is speed and he is a power runner. That would be a bad mix

Future Hall of Famer? Have you been stealing from Jamal's secret stash? He hasn't even been an effective rusher since his monster 2003, averaging 3.7 YPC ever since. He's only cracked the Top 10 in TDs once, and at this point gets his 1,000 yards a season solely because the Ravens hand him the ball 300 times a year. Oh, and let's not forget that he was suspended from the league and spent time in prison for dealing coke... There's no way Lewis makes the Hall.

YEAH! They NEVER let cokeheads into Hall of Fames!!! (cue the "I was set up like a mutha" LT soundbite) I think you're gonna eat those words D21Dub! Some team will sign him and his 3.7 yards, give him 550 carries next season and THEN he'll have TWO 2000 yd campaigns on his resume... that is unless I inexplicably end up with him on my fantasy football team for a FOURTH YEAR in a row (goddamn it; non-productive piece of shut-yo-mouth)

Okay, amend that to "They only ignore the coke if you're really, really good at football." Which Lewis ain't. Besides, LT and Irvin only partook in the drugs -- they didn't try to sell them to anybody...

(D21dub - I just wanted to reference my favorite soundbite) Now, back to the sarcasm! Yeah, just you wait and see!!! WAIT AND SEEEEE!!!! The Houston Texans and/or the CFL/AFL/NFL Europe team that signs Lewis will be getting a very motivated, worn down and ineffective player!!!
