Anyone consider Barry Bonds won't break the record?

by SSreporters

Sure he's at 753 home runs, sure the Giants have LOST 753 games in the process, but all I'm hearing is when he breaks the record. How about if? What if he has a career ending injury before he gets to 756? What happens if he ends up not getting any more HR's the rest of the year (highly unlikely, but it's possible)? What if he suddenly retires? I don't understand everyone's certainty that he will break Hank Aaron's record. Not a single analyst I've heard was uncertain that Bonds would make history. Barry is human you know. Even if he did take steroids, he is still human. Take into consideration, that every pitcher may start walking him once he gets to 754. I have no opinion on the steroids thing, but why are we putting him under so much scrutiny, when Jason Giambi did the same thing? I'd love to see him break the record, being a Bay Area native and all. But it should be known, it's not a guarantee that he'll pass Henry Aaron.

Ummm, no. All of the scenarios you listed are, like you said, highly unlikely. He's three away. He's been in the majors for 20+ years, a career ending injury now would be ridiculous. How can you be a sports fan and not have an opinion on the steroids thing? Seriously?

Its a thought that a lot of people have tossed around... But If i'm a manager who needs to win games (Let's say, Bobby Cox)...i could give 2 shits about bonds and his crap record...I'm here to win...

If Jason Grimsley's list comes out in the next couple days, if Greg Anderson starts doing his canary imitation, and Bonds gets indicted, then, yes, he will not break the record. The only scenario possible.

This article is pretty absurd. The only possibile scenario I see that would keep Bonds from passing Aaron is if he personally decides to throw the curveball of ALL TIME and retire at 754 or 755. And even that has far less than a 1% chance of happening!

What if Bonds gets attacked by a crazy ump (the Fan) and never hits 755... then when Aaron's homers are recounted many years later they'll find out they counted wrong and Bonds really is HR champ.

I never said he wouldn't break the record (I think he will), but I'm just giving suggestions (crazy or not), that we should make it if, and not when.

Look what happened to Monica Seles. She ought to have gone on to dominate the Women's Game for the next 5 years, before the fan stabbed her in Hamburg because he wanted Steffi Graf (a German) to be Women's Number 1. These things happen sometimes.

Bonds ought to retire at 754. Uniquely, Bonds will have even less respect if he gets the most treasured record in baseball than if he doesn't get the record.

Or if everyone tries to bean him, they should make sure it's a 100+ MPH fastball aimed directly at somewhere it's going to hurt.

And people say "it's a less than 1% chance of him not making it". So that makes it < 1 in 100. The UK National Lottery is 1 in 13,986,914 (or something like that, type 1/(49!/43!/6!) into your calculator). That's a much slimmer chance, but some fools think, nay believe, they can do it. The Euromillions lottery is 1 in 114 million (the Maths -> 1/((50!/5!/45!)*(9!/2!/7!)). Yet that's believed by many in Europe. Or at least, those that can't do Mathematics... But you get my point - some things with no chance of happening do happen sometimes. If this were quantum mechanics though, maybe he has a realistic chance of not breaking the record...

Sorry, Euromillions is more like 1 in 76 million, I remembered it being £1.50 a go, so the maximum jackpot is around £114 million... - sorry for that gross error on my part.
