Anthony Reyes Throws One-Hitter But Takes the Loss

11
Vote

St. Louis Cardinals SP Anthony Reyes allowed just one hit last night against the Chicago White Sox, unfotunately that one hit was a home run to Jim Thome. Reyes did not give up a hit or a walk until the seventh, though Jermaine Dye reached on an error. After the home run Reyes continued to mow down the Sox. The Sox pitcher, Freddy Garcia also pitched well, pitching a shutout.

According to David Smith of Retrosheet, since 1957, there have been only eight "1-0 games won on a homer which was the team's only hit."

If your pitcher doesn't win giving up only 1 run on one hit to boot, then maybe your team needs a nice kick in the butt. Reyes basically played like david carr. He's good, but his team did not support him. For cardinals fans, this should scare the crap out of them...

I think the previous 2 games should scare them a lot more. A 1-0 game sucks to see, but a game like that is usually because of some great defense and a dominating pitching performance. But when they're outscored 118-4 over 2 games....that's something to worry about.

Reyes is going to be scary-good. There's definitely a silver lining here.

I've never seen him pitch, but from what I hear he won't be scary good. He's supposed to develop into a good pitcher, but per places like John Sickles and Baseball America he's going to be a very good pitcher, but not a great one. Course, if he's adapting this quickly to major league hitting then they could very well be wrong

In the previous game in which Jacque Jones hit the home run to beat the White Sox, the Sox starting pitcher that day was Freddy Garcia. Last night when Thome did it to Reyes, the Sox starting pitcher was Freddy Garcia. Karma.

Per Retrosheet, Robinson's HR was his 493rd of his career, tying him with Lou Gehrig.

Reyes what can I say.. I was there and it was great to see him step up and throw the 1 hitter against the Sox. It's the light at the end of the tunnel to the playoffs for the Cards , and I think if he can pull through and keep his pitching up we will see the Cards as a continuing force in the race. I've read posts on other sites about Pujols falling off and that he wont get his swing back this season...I say hogwash to that. He did go 0-4 Thursday night but he did make contact. His first hit a line shot to left field was a rocket...Just not enough. Give him a week and the boy will be back.
