Another Tainted World Series?

14

by user MikeBriggs

Entering the World Series, there was much talk of a possible Detroit Tigers sweep. Then the St. Louis Cardinals won game one. So, sweep for the Cards? Nope, Kenny Rogers and his mysteriously brown smudged hands, won game two for the Tigers. Series tied 1-1. Rogers great work smeared by some odd brown substance

Image:rogershands.jpg

That brown oil smear on Rogers' hand (the picture on the left is from Game 3 of the ALCS and the picture on the right is from game 2 of the World Series)? According to Rogers, it was dirt. Is the dirt especially liquidly in Detroit? Rogers pitched a great game, giving up just two singles and three walks in 8 innings of work, but now because of that mysterious brown sludge on his pitching hand, an asterisk has to be attached to the game. Did Rogers cheat? Did he not cheat? You would hate for the guy to pitch an outstanding game, and get labeled a cheater, if he didn't cheat, but you (whoever this mysterious "you" is referenced here) would hate for him to be able to get away with cheating.

Cheating, of course, isn't new to the World Series, and sometimes the cheating is an attempt to win (Jay Howell, though that was the NLCS, not the World Series; or any overly muscular home-run hitter who has played in the World Series and has the shadow of steroids or the like marring his career ("his", am I being sexist? Unless someone went undetected, even MLB baseball players named Christy are male) or an attempt to lose (see: 1919 Chicago Black Sox, or see the movie "Eight Men Out").

The Cincinnati Reds ended up with a World Series win in 1919, but with the public ("say it ain't so Joe") aware that it might have been, should have been, the White Sox World Series victory. If the Tigers win the series, will they be marred by this mysterious brown substance? Will the world continue to argue about the "tainted" Tigers-Cards series 90 years later? Only time will tell.

I'm wondering A why LaRussa didn't put the game under protest, and B why the umps talked to both managers and did nothing.

Just like those times when the other team puts spotters up in the stands to steal the signals being flashed by the catcher to the pitcher.

i dont get how people keep saying - "Yeah but once he wiped off whatever was on his hand, he still did great" -- This is ridiculous. If it was in fact pine tar, he is a cheater bitch who should be suspended

The Gambler is in fact a country music singer. In a country of 300 million, some people have similar, even identical names. The more common the last name, the more likely the first names are to be similar. However, believe you me, they are completely different people.

The sad thing here is that a sportscaster, who should have no effect on the game other than calling the plays, is the one who brought this to everyone's attention! If McCarver would have kept his nose into doing color commentary this would not even be an issue. It would have been up to the Cardinals to catch it, instead of being told about it on air.....I think Deion was right..

Yeah, McCarver's a total douchebag for outing a cheater instead of seeing it and keeping his mouth shut. Are you kidding me? That's idiotic. Someone who sees corruption or cheating and doesn't point it out is complicit.

pitchers do it all the time, most don't use pine tar cause it's so obvious. they all use "stuff" to grip the ball especially when it is cold out. don't be a hypocrite they all do it. now, if he scuffed the ball to make it dip the way it's been dipping, then you have something. but nobody has accused him of doing that yet.

Thats the worst argument I have ever heard. A lot of players were taking steroids, does that make it right? hey, maybe they shouldn't suspend Merriman than, everyone knows all NFL players take steroids.

Does it surprise everyone that Kenny Rogers would cheat? He's a jerk. Is this such a shocking newsflash? I just wish the Tigers' pitcher in Game One had done it; then maybe the Cardinals wouldn't have proven me wrong ;-)

Only Kenny Rogers could have a smear on his hand that looks like he wiped his butt with his hand and claim it was dirt. I've never seen a dirt clod that looks like that. This is huge. Seriously, has there been a World Series scandal this big since the Chicago Black Sox?

get off your high-horses. getting a grip on the ball is much different than steroids or scuffing the ball. you are telling me that you don't think all pitchers put crap on their hands to get a grip especially in cold weather? that is bullcrap. that is why you didn't hear the cardinals complain one bit!!! if they thought it was something to worry about they would have protested the game or came charging out. you people don't know crap about baseball. and i don't even like rogers, he was awful on the yankees. just cut the guy some slack he is pitching the playoffs of his life and it has nothing to do with pine tar, NOTHING. He washed it off in the second and pitched awesome the rest of the game.

Kenny seems to be saying that it was dirt mixed with rosin and other stuff. I don't know exactly what that would look like and I'm not going to outright defend him cause that would be dumb as I don't have all the facts.

But if the Cardinals really suspected foul play than they would have put in an official protest and had the umpires check what it was, rather than letting him wash his hands. The fact that they let it go really seems to point that they didn't think he was cheating.

Either way, after the first inning the Cardinals have no excuses for not being able to hit Kenny. I don't think that one possible inning of foul play should tarnish an entire championship run, if in fact we do end up winning. Thats like saying that any team with a player on steroids, or under suspicion of such, should have their title marred by controversy.

Actually, X-boy Anon #3 makes a lot of sense. Maybe you should try reading it before making dismissive statements that do not add any value to the debate. The point Anon #3 is making about Rogers is that even if there was something on his hand, why when it was removed in the middle of the first inning, did he continue to baffle Cardinal hitters? Also, if you know anything, and I mean anything about baseball, you will know that on cold days pitchers put stuff on their hand to get a grip on the ball. Is it cheating of course, is it a SCANDAL? NO. This issue was dead before the end of the game- HENCE NO PROTEST FROM THE ST. LOUIS CARDINALS. ONLY FROM BASEBALL "FANS" that know NOTHING about the game.

It depends on what they put on their hands. Some things are legal and some aren't. I'm getting tired of this "everyone does it" argument. Chris Carpenter and Andy Reyes didn't have brown smears on their hands. Come to think of it, neither did Justin Verlander. Neither does Joel Zumaya or Todd Jones. Or ANYONE ELSE PITCHING IN THIS SERIES. Everyone doesn't do it, and even if they did, it wouldn't make it any less of a breach of the rules. That would only make a Cardinal complaint hypocritical.

I also have to say that Kenny boy hasn't earned a lot of credibility in this story. He's already lied about what the umpires came out there to talk to him about, so why should I turn around and beleive him about what was on his hand? And for the snots here that want to keep insulting people as not knowing anything about baseball...when was the last time you pitched in a game? Baseball players on the high school level ask an ump for a new ball if the one they have has dirt on it. But you want us to believe that Rogers pitches without being aware of mud and spit all over his pitching hand? It's an absurd thing he's asking us to buy, and the fact that you're buying what he's selling says a world about you and your knowledge of the game.

I don't even like rogers, he was terrible on the Yankees. I'm just saying that he washed his hands in the first inning and STILL baffled the Cardinals. And you really think that major league baseball pitchers don't put stuff on their hands in cold weather? do you notices how they "blow" into their hands? THAT is technically illegal as well.

I'm not saying they never put stuff on their hands, I'm saying that if they do put stuff on their hands, it's cheating. The measure about blowing on your hands is preventative. They're trying to prevent you from doctoring the ball. It's entirely different from ACTUALLY doctoring the ball.
