Another Endless Debate: Best Sports Names

30
Vote

by user Manny Stiles

Well, I am a short time reader, first time poster...
Prepare yourself adequately for Manny Stiles...
...more to come and Manny more at www.kombolsports.blogspot.com - Manny Stiles' Varietal Sports Junk
or my blogring of everything else at www.kombol.blogspot.com -Manny Stiles: th' Komillion

But here we go with one of my favorite sports topics; good for most any occasion-
Another endless debate:

What are the best sports names? (in no particular order)

Razor Shines, Uwe Blab, World B Free, Heinie Manush, Uwe von Schamann, Porfirio Altamirano, Dick Butkus, Rusty Kuntz, Dick Trickle, Foots Walker, God Shammgod, Urban Shocker, Tuffy Rhoades, Fat Lever, Oil Can Boyd, Pie Traynor, Earvin 'Magic' Johnson, Ervin "Stiff" Johnson, Randy Johnson, Miroslav Satan (PLEASE trade him to the Devils), Radek Bonk, Coco Crisp (sorry, I am not adding Milton Bradley - that's a quirky name, not a funny name) Boog Powell and Dick Pole.

This is a quick list, not complete, by any means...

Can you add more? Post a comment...

At one point in 1998, the Reds had an outfield of Dmitri Young, Mike Frank, and Chris Stynes -- Young Frank and Stynes.

You have the Michigan linebackers, Steele and Irons. AJ Hawk is another good linebacker name, and he's damn ugly. I always appreciated JT Snow, the shortest name in baseball for being very succinct. Andy Van Slyke is one that's a lot of fun to yell from the outfield bleachers. Rocket Ismail is another great name, especially given his position. Gaylord Perry, I couldn't imagine being struck out by him, that'd be awful. There are many names in sports worth mentioning. Brian Boitano just sounds like a figure skater.

and i quote from coco "My grandmother called me "Co" for short. My real name is Covelli, and then once my sister and my god brother got a whiff of the cereal Cocoa Krispies, they started calling me that and making fun of me. My nickname started as a big joke and I didn't like it at first. But then it started catching on and everyone started calling me Coco so I got used to it. It resurfaced again in Double-A when they put it on the scoreboard and now I like it. I've just adopted it as my nickname. It helps me stick out in the crowd. When I go on the road people love to say the name. It's also easier to pronounce than Covelli. "

I'm not sure you got what I meant... Calling him Coco knowing his name came from Cocoa Krispies might make MLB jealous that they are not getting their cut. With Bud Selig in charge, who knows?

What about Fred? Bear with me for a moment - he's a Brazilian soccer player in the midst of Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Kaka, and the rest. Fred. It really rolls of the tongues of World Cup broadcasters.

How could you forget Harry Colon on a list of great sports names? I remember him on the Detroit Lions. Always got a kick out of that when he got flushed by Favre and the Pack on a regular basis.

This name discussion and Coco Crisp in particular has made me think, how much could a professional athlete get to change their name to a product or company. What would a company pay to have Barry Bonds change his name to General Motors. Think about it, every time he is on Sports Center, announced for the game, and his records in the Hall of Fame would all advertise the company.

Snooker player Jimmy White signed a deal with Heinz Brown Sauce to call himself James Brown to bring more money into snooker (it was flagging at the time). But World Snooker ignored the plea, saying that he had entered the tournaments as Jimmy White, so that is what he was going to be called. So the deal broke down. So its been tried, but snooker stopped it. But they would - very few British Stadia have sold naming rights, let alone the player's names! There was outrage when it was rumoured Malcolm Glazer was going to officially rename Old Trafford the Vodafone Arena.
