A difference between this chart and the Oden one is that some of the players listed here were on their 2 nd NBA season. The first thing that I noticed is that Durant is a much better rebounder at the same age than anyone on this list, but is not nearly the passer that Lebron and Magic were at the same age. His game is probably most similar to Carmelo Anthony with much better rebounding ability. The other thing you may notice is that the games improvement average of comparable players is slightly less than that of Oden at about 11 games vs. almost 14. Durant truly is an oddity with nearly the height of Garnett and the slippery mid-range game reminiscent of Carmelo.
Trying to decide between picking Oden and Durant is difficult. Do you pick a player who can anchor your team’s defense for the next decade or do you pick the player who is a little younger and seemingly a little more NBA ready. If you are a team like the Celtics who needs that defensive anchor and has a perimeter scorer like Pierce and inside scorer like Jefferson you probably pick Oden. If you are the Grizz with Pau Gasol inside you probably go with Durant.
