Another Blown Coverage by the NFL

I love the NFL. I love that Commissioner Roger Goodell is stepping up to the plate and giving people the suspensions they deserve. He has been great for the game: where Tagliabue was great for the game, bringing in the money to create the league we wanted, Goodell has been the perfect man for the task of cleaning up the “steroids” issue.
But there is always something that even a commissioner “demi-god” can screw up.
From the AP:
“Dallas quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson, a former NFL quarterback, was suspended for five games by the NFL on Saturday for buying and using performance-enhancing substances.
Wilson said he took the drugs to try to improve the quality of his life after living with diabetes for more than 20 years.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said both Wilson's suspension and the suspension Friday of New England safety Rodney Harrison stemmed from the investigation by the Albany (N.Y.) district attorney's office. Authorities there have been looking into an Internet ring involving performance-enhancing drugs and allegedly involving athletes from a number of sports.
Aiello said the third NFL person involved in the investigation was Dr. Richard Ryzde, one of the Pittsburgh Steelers' team doctors. He had earlier been fired by the team.”
Lions Assistant Joe Cullen got one TOTAL game for his “nude drive through” incident and a DUI, but a guy who took something to fight a disease gets five.
I understand that a performance-enhancing substance is a performance-enhancing substance, but what is the difference between someone taking one for diabetes and one taking them to hit a guy harder? Was Wade Wilson going to coach better? Maybe help Romo keep a hold of the ball?
He should have told the NFL and the Cowboys front office, but this seems a bit like overkill. It seems like: “Well, we got a couple players, now we have to lock down on coaches…so they don’t get mad…and tackle someone…on the sideline…”
The NFL messed this one up.
They messed it up big.
In other news: Wilford Brimley is emptying his medicine cabinet.
