Ankiel Homers Twice, Battling Drew Brothers

Baseball Notebook

Around the Bases

Rick Ankiel homered twice yesterday giving him three homers in twelve at at bats since returning to Cardinals and the major leagues for the first time since 2004. Question is why did the Cardinals wait so long to call him up? It took him 87 at bats to hit his first two major league homers and now with 99 at bats he has five homers.... John Lackey and Josh Beckett won their fifteenth games of the season yesterday. Last year Johan Santana and Chien-Ming Wang led the AL in wins with 19 and Lackey and Beckett still would need five wins each to become 20 game winners in 2007 and with so many no decisions there is no guarantee either will win 20 games. J.D. Drew is struggling to stay ahead of his lesser known brother Stephen Drew who has two more homers than J.D. Stephen is only six runs batted in behind his brother who is making about $14 million more than Stephen. J.D. has hit a grand total of two homers in Fenway Park so it is easy to see why Red Sox nation is not thrilled with Drew. He hasn't homered since the All Star game in 77 at bats. It will take a late season surge for Drew to even have 60 runs batted in. Cannot imagine a more idiotic free agent signing than the signing of Drew by the Red Sox. He is hitting .152 against the Yankees with 5 hits in 33 at bats and .111 against the Tigers with 2 hits in 18 at bats for a total of 7 hits in 51 trips to the plate against two of the best teams in American League showing he is not a money player. Scott Boras did his job wrangling the huge contract from the Red Sox but Drew has not performed like a $14 million player should perform.

Pst... I wouldn't have been surprised if Drew had a .075 average against the Tigers; good pitchers vs. Drew.

As far as Beckett and Lackey go, Beckett has had a W-L decision in his last 12 starts. The Red Sox haven't done really done well offensively offensively, and it shows since he was 2-3 in July with a 3.50 ERA (his allowed 1, 2, and 5 runs that month) and 6-4 in his last 10 starts. He hasn't been doing so good since June 8th, but the Red Sox offense has been slipping with him like a Dice K game.

As far as John Lackey goes, his ERA has been going up as well, but his offense has helped him as well. He's 5-1 in his last 6 W-L decisions (out of his last 8 starts).

I think that Lackey has a better chance of becoming a 20 game winner than Beckett. In fact, I think that Lackey will be a 20 game winner, but Beckett won't. Beckett has lost 4 of his 5 games in the last month and a half, and the Sox haven't done much for him as of late.

Ankiel continues to be a made-for-Disney story. Awesome. I hate JD Drew. I have hated him ever since he refused to sign with the Phillies, who drafed him, and I continue to hate him now. I wish the Sox would just dump his overpaid, overhyped, underperforming ass.

Yeah, I agree. So who is gonna play Ankiel on the big screen - Costner or Quaid?

Oh, BTW, Rick Ankiel has done well for the Cardinals since he's come back. He has a .417 AVG for the season, with 3 homers (all in the past 3 games for the Cardinals).

For a team that has lacked any kind of power behind Pujols, Ankiel should have been brought up weeks ago.

Ankiel was not brought up earlier because the Cards have no shot at the playoffs, why rush the guy? Obviously, his mental well-being is susceptible to a meltdown, so why rush him. Anyone who actually thinks the Cards have a shot at the playoffs need only look at their lineup and starting rotation for evidence of their crappiness.

Kip Wells has a 5-13 record...Anthony Reyes 1-11 and Mike Maroth is 0-4 so they have three starters combining for a 6-28 record...no way they can catch up unless some of these guys start winning more often.

They also have ERAs of 5.27, 5.48, and 11.08, and and WHIPs of 1.559, 1.33, and 2.242 respectively, which is ridiculous. And BTW, Reyes is now 2-11, so that's a start for HIM.

Agree with AngeHamm...J.D. Drew only cares about himself and how much money he can get paid...he gave the Phillies the shaft when he refused to sign with them and told me all I ever wanted to know about him. Combine him with a free agent like Scott Boras and a lot of teams are going to be victims of their dog and pony show. Red Sox wish they had never signed Drew.

Goes to show how much deep s**t the Cardinals are in when this guy is the lead story every day. They're a Pujols injury away from being the Devil Rays.

Kelsdad made excellent point. Hope Pujols can keep his streak of at least 30 home runs and 100 RBI's going but the 100 RBI's mark may not be easy to reach.
