Angels Preview: First Base

Kotchman should have the edge.
Kotchman should have the edge.

It is clear that the Angels are not satisfied with their first base position. Over the offseason they explored trades for Atlanta's Adam LaRoche and Colorado's Todd Helton. However, these potential moves failed and the Angels are now stuck with a group of players including the likes of Casey Kotchman, Kendry Morales, Robb Quinlan, and Shea Hillenbrand.

If healthy, Kotchman should have the edge at first base for two main reasons. He is a better fielder than Morales, and just as good of a hitter. However, before he can take the full-time job, he must prove he's healthy and has fully recovered from mononucleosis. Reports in winter ball have all been positive, and he is expected to be fine. Kotchman also has to shake the rust of nearly a year off from playing baseball.

Last season, Kotchman allowed the Angels to take a gamble and move Darin Erstad back to center field. Erstad was a Gold Glover, but the Angels obviously felt that Kotchman was a good enough fielder to start at first. Morales' skills in the field are not nearly as polished as Kotchman's, and he is more suited to be a designated hitter.

If you compare offensive numbers at the Major League level, Kotchman also has the edge over Morales. Morales hit .409 in his first five games with the Angels last season but ended up hitting .211 in 52 games after that. Kotchman struggled initially in his first callup in 2005 but over the last 40 games of 2005, he hit .302 with seven homers.

Another option at first is the lefty hitting machine, Robb Quinlan. Last season, Quinlan had a career year with nine homers and a .321 batting average. However, he is not expected to be an every day starter.

If Morales and Kotchman fail to produce at first look for Shea Hillenbrand to fill the void. Hillenbrand is a well seasoned veteran, who can also play Third Base and Designated Hitter. However, the Angels are hoping that Kotchman, Quinlan, or Morales can produce at first so Hillenbrand can DH.

All in all, expect Kotchman to be starting opening day with Kendry Morales in Salt Lake. Shea Hillenbrand will be the Designated Hitter and Quinlan will be coming off the bench.

They are both good fielders. They are also both bad offensive players. Morales = Kotchman plus a little more power. I would go with Morales and accept either one is a bad choice.

Going into Spring Training the job belongs to Hillenbrand. The Angels would love nothing more than Kotchman to win the job, but he hasn't fared well with his opportunities. I expect the Angels to swing a deal which would include either Cabrera or Aybar with a 1B coming to LA.

Your thinking appears logical to an outsider, but illogical to an Angels Blogger. First off, Hillenbrand is marked in to play DH. Juan Rivera, the typical DH is sidelined for at least the first half of the season. Kotchman hasn't fared that well for the Angels, but I would like to see him get a full year first before we make an honest evaluation. Third, the Angels won't swing a deal. They typically don't like to give up young guys like Aybar. I am not against a deal. but Stoneman is the GM and he likes to build a team around vets (Garrett Anderson, OC, Vladdy, Matthews)and young guys from the farm system (Weaver, Napoli, Kendrick, Kotchman).

I appreciate and respect your opinion as an Angels fan or blogger, but your statement shows a general lack of experience on how baseball is played. Hillenbrand was not signed to be the DH, that job was Rivera's as you say. What moved him to first and maybe ultimately to DH was the signing of Mathews, which moved Figgins to third. And I'm NOT and Angels fan and I know for fact the Angels would trade Aybar in a heartbeat if the offer was right. Cabrera is their first choice obviously, because Aybar is young, but the Angels future will be built around Brandon Wood, not Aybar or Kendrick or Mathis or any of their other young players. Corner infield positions are generally power positions, so Figgins lack thereof means first base will need to make up the difference. The Angels need a legitimate 35 homer 120 RBI guy at first, and while Hillenbrand is not that guy for sure, neither is Kotchman. He projects at best a Lyle Overbay type, high average, little pop. Plus with a young player already established at second, Hillenbrand provides veteran prescence. And my statement was "going into spring training", I said nothing of being in the lineup Opening Day.

I disagree with you on one of your points. The future is Kendrick, not Wood. Wood will bring a nice power bat to SS, but Kendrick is the type of player you can build an infield around. Wood could be a star, but Kendrick will be a superstar.

The Angels don't need a 35 home run guy. That is not how they play. Their offensive philosophy is, "Get 'em on, Get 'em over, Get 'em in." What they like is who hit for average, and can have some pop. Mike Napoli, Howie Kendrick, Casey Kotchman, Gary Matthews Jr, and Orlando Cabrera are all guys who hit for average and have some pop in their swing too.

I really like Mike Napoli. 20+ HR power and he gets on-base. Throw in some nice glovework and you've got one heck of a young catcher.

Kendrick will be 27 this season, if he was so good he would have been in the bigs four years by now. Sorry, but no one builds teams around 26 year old rookies with a history of weight problems. Remember Carlos Baerga? Kendrick may eventually win a batting title, but I doubt he has a very long career.

Actually, Kendrick will be 23 this season. Owners DO build teams around 23-year-old rookies with tremendous gloves and stellar bats in the middle infield.

How did you get 27? He is 23 and Wood is 22. Wood will be playing in 08 or 09. Cabrera will have 1-2 more years left at shortstop. He could eventually move to third. Wood (22) and Kendrick (23) will be a great one two punch in the middle.

I never said I was good at math. Thanks guys for the correction, Kendrick will turn 24 this season. My bad.

"The first base job is wide open, but considering Hillenbrand's experience and offensive prowess, he is the leading candidate going into Spring Training. We would like Casey Kotchman to finally put it all together, but he needs to prove he is healthy and would take a strong spring to win the job."

Bill Stoneman to USA Today American League columnist Bob Nightengale.

Angels are also in continuing talks with Colorado for Todd Helton, a deal which would include a combination of Orlando Cabrera, Chone Figgins or minor league infielder Erick Aybar.

Look at the Angels roster. This is common sense, not "I think..."
