Angel Cabrera wins U.S. Open

by user Tylersalt

Stemming off pressure from Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk, Argentine Angel Cabrera won the U.S. Open by a stroke at Oakmont today. He shot a 1-under 69 on Sunday, and led the tournament after 36 holes. Woods has never won a major tournament without at least a share of the lead after three rounds. Woods played really well, but seemingly couldn't make a putt outside of around 12 feet in the entire tournament. He didn't make a birdie in his last round and a half.

Aaron Baddeley, the leader after 54 holes by two strokes at +2, shot an awful 10-over par 80 to fall out of contention playing with Woods in the final pairing on Sunday. Cabrera hit a fantastic second shot on the fifteenth hole, leaving it within 10 feet from the hole. Woods and Furyk finished at +6, one shot behind Angel. When asked whether he or San Antonio Spurs player Manu Ginobili was the bigger star in Argentina, Cabrera answered "Ginobili" without hesitation.

But what got better ratings? The US open probably got higher ratings than the NBA Finals.

I think the Stanley Cup on VS got better ratings than the Finals...

I can't believe Tiger didn't pull it out at the end. I just knew that last putt to tie was going to fall... but it didn't. I guess you can't win them all.

Wow, there wasn't a doubt in my mind that he was going to miss that last one. He hadn't made a putt all weekend.

It was the birdie putt on 12 that he missed that cost him the tourney

Such is golf. You can't just pinpoint where you lost it to one shot or one hole. But, it also wouldn't have hurt if he hadn't hit 3 bad shots on 17 and made par on a pretty easy hole.

I thought that bunker shot on 17 was going to check close... If so, he would have definitely forced a playoff. Those Oakmont greens are so fast and unpredictable, though.

Yeah, those greens are just unbelievable. That thing had plenty of spin on it and it tried to check up, but it's like trying to stop the ball on the hood of a car.

Yeah Oakmont is a joke of a course. The US Open is made to find the greatest golfers in the country not embarass them all. If Tiger and all those guys are shooting +5 then what the hell do the members average?

In "A Good Walk Spoiled," it talks about how the members at Oakmont could be heard during the 1994 Open saying that the greens are even faster when they play their member-guest than they are for the U.S. Open! Of course, that was before the USGA decided to turn the Open into the real-life equivalent of "The Predator" on Tiger Woods 2004...

Maybe Tiger needs to take up NASCAR to breakdown another sports barrier :)

Tiger still couldn't overcome the one thing he has never done in his career: Comeback when he's down to win it at the end. It's kinda like Roger Federer never beng able to win the French Open.

Not really the same as Federer. Tiger has won everything there is to win. If he gets a come from behind victory then his legend only grows. If he doesnt rack up a come from behind, well thats not so bad either.

Tiger did say that there was no chance that, under these conditions, a normal 12 handicapper could break 100 at Oakmont this weekend.

You know what really pissed me off about the open. ABC (was it ABC) claiming that this was Jim Furyk's home course...Alright, Jim Furyk went to my high school...he was a state champ and is well recognized throughout the Lancaster, PA area (yeah, Amish Country) and yet, they have the gull to claim it was his home course...it's a three hour drive from my dad's house not even close...I took my old man to a father's day game in baltimore (he likes the O's...god knows why?) and we went the the ESPNZone in the inner harbor after the game to watch the open (I recommend the bbq pork sandwich...suprisingly good for a place like that) and we kept hearing that...its complete bull and he kept looking at me saying "Justin...Pittsburgh is so far from here...and why would anyone ever go there..." My response was usually "I don't know dad...just keep drinking, maybe they'll shut up" Its just like watching your favorite team broadcasted by a foreign local crew...they don't know anything...

It was NBC, but that's interesting. I guess they assumed (and rightly, I think), that a lot of people traveled to watch him. In the grand scheme of things on the PGA tour, 3 hours from where you grew up isn't a whole lot. Perhaps "home course" was a bit of a misnomer, but I think they said that only once before has a player won a US Open in the state of their birth (Tiger at Pebble Beach a few years ago).

Mickelson's home course is Grayhawk in Scottsdale AZ, and he lives in San Diego. It's the course where he a)currently lives and practices or, as in Phil's case, the course who is part of his corporate sponsorship team.

I was somewhat confused by Furyk's choice of a driver on 17. He said that he didn't anticipate hitting it as long as he did since he was shorter all week on that hole. In any case it caused him to have to take a bad angle on his 2nd shot. Did he know he was tied with Cabrera at that point? Maybe not? I believe he probably wouldve played an iron had he known but I have no idea.

Once Tiger wasnt able to make up a shot on 17 I figured he was in trouble. The green on the 18th is just ridiculous. A snake would have trouble navigating it.
