Born on August 6, 1945 in Toms River, New Jersey, Andy Messersmith (John Alexander Messersmith) played for the California Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees over the course of his 12 year career. Messersmith broke into the bigs on July 4, 1968 with the California Angels, and put up a 2.21 ERA in 81.1 innings pitched in 1968, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Andy Messersmith's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1974, when he posted a 2.59 ERA, won 20 games and struck out 221 batters. However, others believe that it was 1975, when he posted a 2.29 ERA, won 19 games and struck out 213 batters.
