Andres Galarraga (Andres Jose Galarraga) was born on June 18, 1961 in Caracas, Distrito Federal (Venezuela). He made his Major League debut on August 23, 1985 for the Montreal Expos. In 1986, his rookie year, he hit .271 with 10 home runs and 42 RBI. Galarraga played for the Montreal Expos, St. Louis Cardinals, Colorado Rockies, Atlanta Braves, Texas Rangers, San Francisco Giants and Anaheim Angels over the course of his 19 year career.

Most people believe that Andres Galarraga's best season was 1996, when he slugged 47 home runs, hit for a .304 average and knocked in 150 runs.

  • Galarraga was the first Venezuelan-born player to win a batting title.
  • He was the first Rockies' player ever represented at All-Star Game (1993)
  • The Big Cat also had a field refurbished and named in his honor. Andres Galarraga Field opened at the Denver Boys & Girls Club. This was the first time this ever happened to a Colorado Rockies' player.
  • He is the Rockies' career leader in At-Bats per Home Runs with 15.5.
  • His 150 RBIs in 1996 is also still a single season record for the Rockies.
  • He currently holds the Rockies' record for RBIs before the All-Star break (84, 1997)
  • He became the first player in history to win two NL Comeback Player of the Year Awards
  • Galarraga was honored in the docudrama movie "Galarraga: puro bĂ©isbol" (2000); Venezuela's movie's title means "Galarraga: Nothing But Baseball"
  • He was also honored in the book "Andres Galarraga - Real Life Reader Biography", by writer Sue Boulais in 2003.
  • Galarraga is one of three players that Hall of Famer Rich Gossage has admitted to intentionally hit with a pitch; the other two were Ron Gant and Al Bumbry.
