And the United States Loses

What an embarassment. The United State's less-than-impressive stay in the WBC came to end on Thursday night as Team Mexico beat the Americans 2-1 to send Japan into the semifinals. Roger Clemens took the loss, allowing both runs, as the U.S. finished 3-3 in the inaugural event.

Time for the United States and its baseball fans to embrace the globalization of baseball. Next time we do the WBC, we better not lose. How embarassing.

Clemens must have felt at home. Allowed two runs and took the loss. Just like his entire 2005 season with the Astros. I gotta say one thing. I kept hearing guys talking about how we haven't been playing the real World Series in the U.S. Huh? The guys carring almost all of these international teams are playing in the U.S. Korea is the exception. But seriously, how dumb a comment is that? Is there any real doubt that the best players in the world are playing in the U.S.? So what if they're not actually from the U.S.?

But Awright is correct. Someone's gotta light a fire under our pro athletes. Between this and the 2004 Olympic basketball team, we look like we couldn't care less about our sports. And while it's true that there are many things that are much more important, do we not care at all?? It's really starting to look that way. Not just because we can't win, but because we don't even seem to want to play at all. What on earth is wrong with the athletes in this country?

We do need to decide whether we take this thing seriously. Obviously, Jeter did -- with a .450 average in the WBC he played like someone who was trying to win. I'm not so sure about some of those other players. But then, the other side of the coin was the injury to Luis Ayala. Should a player risk his main job (winning in the regular season) for the WBC? Interesting question. (See http://www.a...ory_id=58482 for the story on Ayala)
