And the Patriots win the Super Bowl...in July

by Theredking

In both the national media and Boston media coverage of the upcoming NFL season there are a few things that are constant; it is apparent that Michael Vick is an animal lover, everyone hates on Eli Manning more than Pacman Jones and the Patriots are going to, for sure, win the Super Bowl this going February in Arizona.

Why is everyone saying this?

Well, it is true there are many reasons to think this statement to be true. However there are reasons to think otherwise.

Problems The obvious:

·Asante Samuel

If the Patriots front office was running a fantasy team then paying Asante a rediculous amount would make more sense. The problem is 10 picks is great for fantasy but getting burnt when making these gambles does not show up on fantasy stats but it sure as hell does every sunday. Still, the Patriots need him.

·The secondary

Where to begin?

Rodney Harrison is coming back but who knows how affective he will be.

As it stands now the starting corners are Ellis Hobbs and Tory James! Think about that for a minute and tell me that even this team can overcome this fact.

Maybe Meriweather will step up and then either him or Eugene Wilson can move to corner if all else fails.

The not so obvious:

·The run game

This team was a middle of the pack team run-wise last year. Last year they had Corey Dillon to help carry the load with Laurence Maroney. Although Maroney did play in 14 games, health was an issue it seemed on a weekly basis. If that was the case when he was called upon to carry the ball 175 times, what happens when he is the feature back?

This means Sammy Morris is already more important than you want him to be.

Justin Hairston, the 1-AA standout who transfered from Rutgers to Central Connecticut State, walked into a situation where he could get snaps if he deems himself to be ready.

Look, USC has also won the national championship in the media. My reply - this is why they play the games. Here is a shocker, neither the Pats or Trojans will win it all this season.

The good news is that at least we will eventually have a definitive answer to whether the Pats are the best team or not. Bads news is we're not sure the same can't be said for USC.

I talk about this in my 10 Questions on the NFL article. The Pats secondary is it's achillies heal. The running game, not so much... With that core of WR's, the opposing defenses will try and stop them opening up the field for Maroney.

If Maroney can stay healthy, he is a beast. If he can't stay healthy, they are SCREWED in the running game. Sammy Morris can't carry the load, Kevin Faulk isn't an every down back, and Justise Hairston is, well, Justise Hairston. Luckily, the pass offense will make up for weakness in the running game.

Even then, Belechick can just run the 4 wr option and you got 4 flys buzzing around the field impossible to catch. The only way you beat them is by outscoring them.

If the Patriots are a one-dimensional team, then not even Brady's arm can save them. If opposing defenses know they have to pass to move the ball, they'll be in trouble.

I'm glad finally someone pointed out the Patriots are beatable. They need at least a little mini-chip on their shoulder.

The team in 2001 had no business winning the Super Bowl. None. Antwain SMITH was servicable, but even then, there was so little pure talent on that team it's amazing.

Hobbs isn't coming off an injury...I think you're thinking of Eugene Wilson, the safety, perhaps?

And Ellis Hobbs ~ Asante Samuel. Almost equal. Hobbs is a young, up-and-coming corner not too many people know about. He's a very fiery guy, sort of a mini Rodney Harrison with a little more sass.

I'll admit, I'm guilty of handing the Pats the Super Bowl this year, and I hate the team. This article did a fine job of pointing out some flaws on the team which could be a factor later in the season, or during the playoffs.

don't worry...he'll be ok...

Plus they've patched together back their before and it worked...

The pats know samuel isn't worth it

and Samuel knows hes not really worth that much

but they both want to get the most they can

If one or the other of running game and defensive secondary hold up, they'll be fine; they've won without elite performers at either position. If they both suffer any significant injury, I guess we'll see if Brady can carry the team all by himself. With him and that WR core, they'd probably still make the playoffs, but I know that's not what you're looking for.

Apparently Randall Gay has had a great training camp and has shutdown every man he's covered. Just don't try to buy his jersey.

I think the Patriots are hoping that an improved pass rush with Adalius Thomas will help out the secondary. Last season, our already weak secondary was exposed when opposing QBs had too much time to throw the ball. If you watch the Pats-Colts playoff game, in the 2nd half Peyton had all day to find an open receiver. A consistent 4 man pass rush will shut down any QB, and I think that is a better way to shut down a passing game, as opposed to trying to shut down the receivers. Of course, doing both is ideal. The Patriots are the best team on paper this season, which means fuck all. Furthermore, they are not far and away the best team on paper. I can see them going 19-0, but I can also see them going 9-7 and missing the playoffs. Anything can happen.
