Here are the players I choose to be the candidates. If I forget someone who you think should be in the list, put the name in your comment and I will add him.

C.C. Sabathia, Josh Beckett, John Lackey, Kelvim Escobar, Dan Haren, Johan Santana, Justin Verlander, and Jeremy Bonderman.

I will compare the stats which I feel best show a pitchers skills. Those stats are ERA, WHIP and OBA.

ERA
1. Haren (2.20)
2. Santana (2.76)
3. Lackey (3.04)
4. Verlander (3.18)
5. Sabathia (3.20)
6. Escobar (3.32)
7. Beckett (3.38)
8. Bonderman (3.90)

WHIP
1. Haren (0.98)
2. Santana (1.04)
3. Beckett (1.10)
4. Sabathia (1.12)
5. Verlander (1.17)
6. Escobar (1.18)
7. Lackey (1.19)
8. Bonderman (1.21)

OBA
1. Haren (.255)
2. Santana (.271)
3. Beckett (.277)
4. Sabathia (.289)
5. Bonderman (.294)
6. Escobar (.296)
7. Lackey (.303)
8. Verlander (.304)

Wins
1. Sabathia (12)
2. Beckett (12)
2. Lackey (11)
4.Haren (10)
5. Escobar (9)
5. Santana (9)
5. Verlander (9)
8.Bonderman (8)

The totals (lower is better)
1. Haren (7)
2. Santana (11)
3. Sabathia (14)
4. Beckett (15)
5. Lackey (19)
6. Verlander (22)
7. Escobar (23)
8. Bonderman (29)

Not really scientific, but it shows 2 things. Haren is the Cy Young so far, and that Santana is having a better season than people realize.

You forgot wins. Should they count them in Cy voting not necesarily, but they do.

Wins are a useless stat for pitchers IMO.

Pitchers that lose consistently generally don't last long in MLB.

Matt Cain is 2-9, and he's been one of the 10 or 15 best pitchers in the NL this year.

I'll agree with that. Santana is having a great season. A Cy Young worthy season? That's still a possibility. HE needs more wins, and a consistant level of K's

He is second in the ML in K's and he has 9 wins plus 5 losses when he allowed 2 runs.

he needs to be first in k's. That's santana. I dont think wins are a valuable stat, but the voters do

Don't forget that he usually doesn't have the "Johan" stuff thru the middle of June and once again he seems to be heating up as he is getting more consistent in his past 3 starts.

Uhh, seems to me that most of those guys in the "W" total column are also in the other stat categories as well.

Sabathia leads majors in wins but leads the AL in hits allowed with 128 in 129 innings while Dan Haren has pitched 123 innings and only given up only 90 hits.

What's your point? It's not like at the end of the season they're like, oh I'm sorry, Cleveland you had 10 more wins than Detroit but gave up 25 more hits so they make the playoffs, not you.

It's all about the W.

(By the way, I could actually see this happening to a Cleveland team.)

I think wins tell us more about your team's performance around you than your pitching performance. Some guys get more run support than others.

Which is why it's a key factor according to the voters. Who are they going to pick. A 20-5 pitcher with a 2.20 ERA on a first place team, or a 20-5 pitcher with a 2.20 ERA on a last place team? Of course, they're going to pick the pitcher who's on a first place team because he actually got somewhere and would be a key factor, and he made it to the playoffs.

And I think Roy Halladay should be included just to make it 10 pitchers.
