Amazing Mike Piazza stat

9
Vote

by user JCantRoot

Enjoy this short factoid: San Diego Padres catcher Mike Piazza has 22 HRs and 33 runs scored at the moment I am typing this article. That seems too crazy to be possible, but it is.

Mike Piazza scored a run, not from his own HR, only 11 times this year.

That ranks right up there with Brook Jacoby's quasi-productive .300, 32 HR, 69 RBI in 1987.

He must have played leadoff in a lot of innings, surely.

It's runs scored, not runs batted in :)

Check out Alfonso Soriano, too -- 45 HR, 91 RBI. That's worse than Jacoby's ratio.

Yeah, nobody else in Washington can get on base

And Sori bats leadoff. He does have 110 runs, so it's not so terrible.

Soriano bats behind the pitcher! 91 RBIs is awesome for an NL leadoff hitter.

DNL, isnt alex right ? by batting leadoff, you dont get a chance for rbi's, rather someone else hits you in, thereby earning the leadoff hitter a run scored.
right??

I misinterpreted Runs Scored for RBIs, and I figure that DNL thought I made that mistake, so pointed it out. If you bat leadoff, you'd think you'd get more RS than RBI, and I guessed that by fluke of chance, Piazza had leadoff a lot of innings. I doubt this is really the case, it was just a possible explanation I offered. I'm not sure that comparing it to someone that had 32HR and 69RBI helped, when the point was regarding RS, but there we go. I am happy to admit I was wrong. (or at least was confused and misinterpreted it) Just let me think of something to blame it on...

he leads off every inning and either homers or gets out... or just gets on base with no one else on and two outs all the time... or gets picked off alot By the info provided, we don't know how many RBI he has, it could only be 22 for all we know?

Great find on the Piazza stat! The Padres' subpar offense, plus late-inning pinch-running situations, must be contributing factors. Even so, it's still pretty bizarre.

Yeah, the fact that he's pinch-run for so often is probably a big factor. I didn't even consider it.

Piazza has 419 in his career. Next on the career list is Billy Williams in 38th place with 426. Piazza leads major-league catchers with 21 homers. Any chance of him joining the 500 club?

According to the article, Piazza has 22 HRs. :) At 20 a year it'll take him four years, so it's not out of the question.

Piazza has led off the inning 89 times this year, which is 7th best on the Padres. Dave Roberts leads with 196.
