Former Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso has revealed through his own website today that he will be returning to Renault for the 2008 season.
Alonso who is 26 years old won World Championships for Renault during the 2005 and 2006 seasons. Last season he joined McLaren-Mercedes and finished the season in the third spot in the drivers table with 109 points. McLaren rookie sensation Lewis Hamilton finished second also on 109 points and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen won the title with 110 points.
Originally Alonso had signed a three year contract with McLaren but when his relationship with the team deteriorated over the course of the 2007 season it was decided to allow Alonso to leave early. Alonso will join Nelson Piquet Jr. as the two Renault drivers for 2008. Renault has dropped their two drivers from 2007 Giancarlo Fisichella and Heikki Kovalainen.
Alonso had this to say about his return;
"I am delighted to be returning to Renault. This is the team where I grew up as a driver in Formula 1. Now it is time for us to begin a new chapter together. I am very excited about working with this great team once more, and confident that together we can move back to the front of the field. Renault had a difficult year in 2007, but I know that the team has real strength in depth. I am confident they can produce a fast and competitive car and be back at the top in 2008."
Intersting times ahead then for next season's F1 schedule. It will interesting to see if Alonso can bring Renault back to the top of the racing world.
