All of Things I Was Wrong About in 2006 (Sports Edition) by Manny Stiles

by user Manny Stiles

It takes a penis to be a man, it takes a real man to admit he was wrong and it takes an a-hole to admit he was right (and to look like a penis). While I am all three, I am here today to admit I was wrong about some things in 2006. If I listed all the things I was right about in 2006, I'd be here 'til 2008 (see I AM a penis/a-hole, eh?)

Keep in mind, these are the things I was wrong about in SPORTS not life in general (or my wife could make a list taller than I am)

My 2006 ArmchairGM career started out relatively innocently and went downhill from there! What a year!

Credible, Schmedible
Credible, Schmedible

In non-random, yet non-sequential order (I just listed them as I thought of them)

A Big Fat "I apologize"

To MJD (and all other "J-E-T-S, Suck, Suck, Suck" fans), for my incessantly ripping your team and comparing them to the Browns... I incorrectly predicted your team would tie the Browns when they met Oct 29th 0-0.

Whether the Jets make the playoffs or not is irrellevant (since they won't escape the first round) but I am adequately surprised by

But PLEASE stop calling the coach "Mangenius" it really sounds gay. Not in a homosexual way, just gay. How about "Mangini in a bottle", "Lucky" or "Sunshines on a Dog's Ass"?

The Cardinals

ALL of the Cardinals...except Louisville (we ALL knew they WEREN'T going undefeated)

St Louis Cardinals - I had the Padres, Braves or D-Backs beating you out, yet you won the World Series (even though the Tigers clearly threw the series) despite having the MOST overrated coach in Sports.

Arizona Cardinals... well, I was almost not wrong, REALLY wrong, wrong and not so right about them...

But once, I was dead on.

After all, they are the Arizona Cardinals for a reason.

I was wrong about ArmchairGM

I said that it was too easy to get articles promoted to good stuff and then tasted sweet irony with what I thought was among my finest efforts, this, this and I really deserved it with this. Maybe I was too ambitious with this one, too... Everyone needs a little comeuppance, I suppose.

No one died on the field in an NFL game this season (yet)

Then again, I do say this every year

I thought one was possibly better than the other

Turns out, they both suck! (take that)

Isiah Thomas hasn't been busted for crack

Or fired! Yet....

Ryan Zimmerman should have been MVP and will make everyone pay

And a whole bunch of other baseball things I was wrong, semi-wrong and WTF? about....

Trades that I was wrong about (kinda)

A-Rod

Allie I

Like every other red meat eating, gun toting American...

It's tough for Americans to follow World events unless we're good at them

I thought more people would get this...

What a summer this was... It seems every single user played the "let's make an all-time baseball roster comprised of player's last initials using each letter of the alphabet only once, so I went and had to outcreate everyone, then I had to do it again. Maybe you just looked at the roster and didn't think the teams were good, but I put more effort into those two articles than any of the others!

Of course, I went TOO too far with this effort, but that's how I roll...

At least y'all "got" this one and another oldie but goodie! More non-sense to come in 2007!

Tiger Woods didn't get busted with HGH (yet)

He's good, maybe a little TOO good??? but HOW good is he REALLY?

Fred Dryer, OJ Simpson and Tim McCarver are all still alive

I'm still a little sad that Tim McCarver didn't die

While we all mourn the one's we lost in sports, what about THOSE who were forgotten??

John Wooden tops all the Sports Celebs going into 2007 at 95 years old!!! (A mere whippersnapper to my 102 year-old Grandmom, who is still alive and furiously kicking - yes, I just gave a shout out to Granny)

Did I say Shaq?, I meant...umm, umm... uh...

I made the mistake of forgetting Shaq doesn't play basketball from July to April

I failed to recognize the fact that all Internet users are not old enough to drink

Let alone remember a legend, A man ahead of his time or ALL the way back to 1986.

I do get nostalgic from time to time and recall the days before carpal tunnel and broadband, the 1980's.

While I was right about him not winning, I was wrong about him finishing 6th

As much as I love this guy, I'm gonna love him more in 2007, guaranteed!!!

Right team, wrong MVP

I was close, but wrong. Of course, in this sport it's EASY to be wrong. (dammit)

I thought I was going to write a regular piece on the site

Then I remembered how lazy I am

Oh, wait... I have, kinda

I thought this would usher in a new era on ACGM

Still waiting for someone to follow the leader... or do I gotta do EVERYTHING around here?.

I was WAAAAAY off with this one apparently

I knew what I was doing, but I didn't know what I was getting into!

I did hit the nail on the head once

It's funny 'cause it's true

One thing I WON'T be wrong about in 2007

One thing you can take to the bank, Phoenix Suns 2006-07 NBA Champions

Keep writing Y'all!

The penis mightier than the sword!

Enjoy your New Year's celebrations. If you can't be good, at least be safe! from Manny Stiles, (#1 in needless comments, shameless promotion and pointless articles, #694 in your heart!) More of this madness to come in 2007!!!

Hey, Louisville was a dumb offsides penalty against Rutgers from going undefeated. It was a good pick.

I've only been a member here about a month, so I'll take you word for everything you've written. And just how TALL are you? And a side note, most of Baseball-Reference.com's info is actually downloaded from a site called www.Retrosheet.org. It was founded by Society of Baseball Research member and U of Delaware prof David Smith. We (SABR members) are working constantly to update and verify baseball stats and get them up on the site. Current projects include proofing boxscores and game reports from the '50's and locating and verifying game reports from the deadball era. Take a look when you have some time, you won't regret it.

Manny I'm wondering if this is a typo, "The penis mightier than the sword!" is it supposed to be, "the pen is mightier then the sward!"

actually, I don't watch much SNL either... I think that "joke" is as old as the quote itself... It was a reference to the first line where I said "it takes a penis to be a man and a real man to" etc and so forth

I'm sorry Manny, but you're going to be wrong about the Suns. Everyone's jocking them because of their recent winning streak, forgetting all too easily that their record is still THIRD in the Western Conference. And although their recent run has been very impressive, you also have to take into account the teams they've been playing. During their 15-game winning streak, the teams they played have a total record of 207-250 (.453). Only three of those 15 games were against teams with winning records, and one of those was against the 16-15 Bucks. Their best opponent during that span was 18-14 Orlando. In their last five games, the Suns have played three teams with winning records (the five teams are a combined 85-69) and they are just 3-2.

Right now, I think the Suns look a little better than they actually are. In order to win the West, the Mavericks had to learn to play defense better than they had the last few seasons. So do the Suns.

blah, blah bla-bla-bla blah... watch the Suns play and THEN tell me.

The Suns only two losses in the last TWO months came to the WIZ with Arenas going off AND Caron Butler playing a career game, then to Dallas in Dallas with Dirk hitting a buzzer beater.

BTW, the Suns HAVEN'T played as good as they can yet, Coach D'Antoni is still finding his rotation (after the 7 starters)

needless to say, I've been saying it since LAST year, the Suns will be Champs in 2007!

Excellent article, Manny. I agree - it's too easy to get some stuff promoted to "Good Stuff" around here... while other decent articles languish unnoticed. There needs to be some more intelligence to the process, I think.
