All Star Voting has hit an All Time Low.

by user Alexander Wurm

When is it going to end?  When are the real All Stars going to be able to have their names announced in the starting line-up for the whole nation to see who the most outstanding players in the league are?

As of now, i still see names like David Wright, Derek Jeter, and Ichiro Suzuki in the starting line-up, now its not so much to me that those guys arent producing at the All Star level, but what saddenes me the most is to see names like Magglio Ordonez, Miguel Cabrera, and Orlando Cabrera left out at this point, also im still looking for when Gary Mathews Jr. cracks the TOP 15 !  now although he is not having a better season than any of the starters at this point, it still angers me to see names like Coco Crisp, Johnny Damon, and Craig Monroe above him, not only do the stats not compare with Gary Mathews Jr. to this point, the force Gary Mathews Jr. has brought to that Angel line-up from both the lead off spot, to the number four whole, is incredible, and his defense cannot be matched by anyone except possibly Torii Hunter and Grady Seizmore

and also, i almost throw-up everytime i see the name Jason Giambi on the TOP 5 of A.L first Baseman, with a guy like Casey Kotchman to be nowhere insight, no although Casey Kotchman might not be a marquee name just quite yet; but he sure is putting up marquee player type numbers.

and i mean it, if Barry Bonds doesnt get to start in Left Field to represent all he's done for the Giants over the past 18+ years, i will never watch another All Star game again, i mean Barry Larkin got to start at SS a few years back, even though he wasnt having that decent of a year, the thing is with Bonds, is not only the All Star game at San Francisco, but he's to this point not putting up that bad of numbers himself, including leading all of baseball in OBP.

Up to this point here is my All Star Teams for both leagues

Barry Bonds belongs in the All Star Game? What has Bonds done this season to deserve to participate? The only way Bonds should have anything to do with the All Star Game is to race Charles Barkley around the bases during the 7th inning stretch. Now that would be worth tuning into.

How about leading the league in OBP? Bonds deserves to be in the All-Star Game based on his play alone, add in the fact it will be played in SF and he HAS to be there.

I would give you more plusses if I would BB...SF definitely doesn't have another regular 8 that deserves to go over bonds...pitching wise, perhaps morris or cain (regardless of the losing record)...but seriously, if you gotta take 1 giant (and you do), its gotta be bonds...

Do you really believe that with all of Bonds' current health issues, that he is even going to play? You are seeking a token Bonds vote only to be replaced by another player.

more typical Jeter bashing...*yawn*...Jeter isn't producing at All-Star Level? He's hitting over .340. Do you want him to hit .400? Cabrera is having a great season too, but if you checked the stats, Jeter has the edge

I'd take Brendan Harris over Jeter this year (look it up)

Jeter has a higher number of at bats, runs, hits, doubles, triples, rbi's, and stolen bases. He also has a better BA and OBP. Harris only has more homers and a better slugger percentage. Jeter has more errors however, but that was because of his slow start in the first week of the season. So, I would definitely pick Jeter over Harris.

I don't think people want Jeter to hit .400 so much as they want him to retire and just go away.

But then we would see less of Jessica Biel and that is not a good thing.

Jeter bashing, who's bashing Jeter here. Now although their are very few players in baseball that i personally hate more than Jeter, i admit, he's having a solid year. But the fact is what Orlando has done all around, is more than Jeter by a long shot, not only has Orlando Cabrera helped the Angels become one of the premier offenses in the league, he has also put up career number not only at the plate, but on the bases and in the field, while Jeter is on pace for one of his worst defesive season, to go along with less than attratice numbers on the base paths.

Considering who Derek Jeter spoons every night, I highly doubt that he gives a damn about the All Star Game.

dude, how can you leave out Hideki Okajima, arguably the best setup guy in the AL right now, and David Ortiz?

Those are some very good picks. I salute you. I agree with some people here though, like Anonymous Fanatic #1, when he said to not leave out Okijima. Call me biased, but I'm also gonna say that I'd take Youkilis over Kotchman. Why? Well, Youkilis has a .331 AVG so far, and a .414 OBP. He has 85 hits, which is most in the AL (I think). He's also amazing on defense. If I started Youkilis, I might have a tough time picking between Kotchman and Morneau, cuz Morneau has been slumping as of late (besides that walk off homer).. And I also realized that you put Dmitri Young in. He is probably one of the most underrated baseball players today. I'm surprised that someone here even mentioned him. He's had a REALLY good year this year. Thanks for putting a realistic team for once. I'm so sick and tired of looking at the newspaper and finding people who are less deserving than others on top...

It is because the fans always pick the same damn people. Just have players and coaches vote.

Hmm, something tells me you live in or within close proximity to state of California. That said, East coast bias has reached an all-time high in baseball. Does half the country even know that players like Matt Holliday, John Lackey, JJ Putz and Dan Haren exist? I will give the last two a pass, as they are rising stars, but Lackey and Holliday are arguably the best pitcher and hitter right now.

Exactly. I'm from the East Coast, and I've gotta say that I'm sometimes ashamed of how my friends and family vote. It's all Ortiz, Manny, Lowell, Lugo, Vartiek, Crisp, Pedroia, etc.

When I voted, I voted for Youkilis. I just realized how well Kotchman was doing and I knew Morneau was in a slump, so I picked him. And I did NOT pick Ortiz cuz he doesn't play first base. I'll pick him when games are held in AL stadiums.

I voted for Pedroia a couple of times. He's had a pretty good rookie season, to be honest. I also voted for Polanco and Upton. They are well deserved to be in the game as well.

Catcher: Jorge!! Even though he's on the Yankees, I gotta give him his props. He's second in the MLB in AVG (I think). He's having a REALLY good year, as well as AROD. Those two are really good players, and deserve to be in there.

I voted for Derek Jeter a couple of times cuz he's one of my favorite players. I know, it's funny cuz I'm a Sawx fan, but I just love his desire for the game. Like always, he's brought decent game this year with a .330+ average, but his defense is a lil shaky, which is why I didn't vote for him all 25 times. I voted for Miggy Tejada, cuz he's done aight as well.

Outfielders: Tough outta these 4: Hunter, Ichiro, Vlad, and Magglio. I'm not voting for Manny; anyone who does is wasting their votes. We all know he's not gonna play in the all star game even if he gets all the votes he needs to get in. Alexis Rios has been doin pretty good as well, and so has Grady Sizemore.

So, hopefully, I can set an example for AL East fans, and I hope that we have a good outcome when it comes right down to the All Star Game...

A couple of things.

1) JJ Hardy is probably 4th in the NL. Jose Reyes, Hanley Ramirez and Jimmy Rollins are all before Hardy, in that order. 2) The all star-game is not about all-stars. its about putting out a dream team that fans want to see. The all-star game is already a non-event, why would the MLB want to put out 2 teams with players that the fans don't want to see? Didn't you see how that worked for the NBA and NHL finals?

3) Nothing was more embarrassing than the Mets game where they kept asking people to vote for Paul LoDuca.

Yeah...I agree, Hardy, at best, deserves a reserve spot...Reyes should probably start and I think Ramirez (maybe Rollins, doubtful) gets the reserve role. The all-star game is designed with both in mind. 1) Fans basically elect the starting 8 and are usually pretty good at getting it, however sometimes large markets push the wrong player to the top...like cal ripken a few years ago...2) Coaches pick the rest and are usually pretty good as well, this year shouldn't be different...

Sox asked Ortiz if it would be ok to remove his name from the ballots the players get to insert Youkalis instead. That is Youk's only chance to get in as a backup.
