Here we are approaching the first Saturday in October, a full month into the college football season. This is the time when everything becomes a little less fuzzy, and a tad bit clearer (damn, these new contacts work . . . Can’t wait to see what I see in November). Gone are the days of all the preseason predictions & expectations, as we are slapped in the face by a dose of reality…Or is that slap courtesy of John L. Smith, (bet he still wishes he was still in the preseason still). These first four weeks have taught us many things…Things that are really no longer debatable, well except for one.
Heading into the first games of October there’s no question who’s the number one team in the country. The bigger debate would questionably be who’s the second best…Well, reality (or John L. Smith) hasn’t yet slapped us in the face on that. With Ohio State being the best team in the country, does that mean they also have the leading Heisman Trophy candidate in Troy Smith? Many would argue yes, seeing as how this award is always media driven…Thus why he’s being force fed down our throats. Hey ESPN, we know Troy Smith is real good, however surprisingly he’s not the best player in the country. No, sorry…For that you’d have to go to Dekalb, Illinois to find him. Although first you would have to find Dekalb, Illiniois…Now you know ESPN’s problem, their navigational system can’t even locate it.
How many times have we heard the names of Troy Smith, Adrian Peterson, and yes, still Brady Quinn…Um, countless seems to cover it. I’ll give you, for good reason as they play big time college football. Now, how many times have we heard the name Garrett Wolfe…Not enough! Why all this 5-7, 177-pound ran for 1,580 yards and 16 touchdowns last season despite missing three games with injuries. Okay, so if this was his statline last season, how come he wasn’t mentioned in the preseason Heisman hype like he should’ve been (the fine print doesn’t count either…Which says something to the realm of competition he’s playing against, or lack there of).
Hey Buckeye fans, didn’t you guys get a first hand, up close look at Mr. Wolfe the first game of the season…Yeah, I think you did. What a 2006 debut it was, too…Rushing for 171 yards and adding 115 receiving against No. 1 Ohio State. I suppose some will say, “That was when OSU had no defense,”…Sure, whatever you have to tell yourself to sleep better at night. That was just a tune-up! Week after week this cat does himself one better…In his most recent performance last week he just merely rushed for 353 yards last week against Ball State that heightened the potential Heisman buzz. Potential…Are you kidding me? Lets see, in five games Garrett has rushed for 1,181 yards & scored 11 times…Hello, that’s 236.2 per game. In addition to catching 12 balls for 159 yards. Wolfe has more rushing yards than all but six I-A teams….He has more rushing yards than Notre Dame, and they're ranked 12th .
"If people aren't going to vote for him or appreciate how good he is because he plays in the MAC, so be it. But don't give me that argument that he did it against Ohio State's second team." Northern Illinois Head Coach Joe Novak said. Although Novak has one request of Heisman voters before they dismiss star running back Garrett Wolfe: Just watch him. Thank God there’s another option for me to watch on Sunday night….Yes, Mr. Wolfe will finally make his National Television debut as the Huskies will take on Miami (Ohio). Sorry NBC, your Pittsburgh-San Diego game doesn’t intrigue me…You might’ve captured my attention if you televised the Eagles-Cowboys game…And secondly, I have no fantasy players on the Steelers or Chargers.
So on Sunday night we’ll get to see if he’s Heisman worthy or not? Although the sad thing is, even if he does break, or comes close to breaking Barry Sanders single season rushing record of 2,628 yards set back in 1988, Wolfe won’t likely win the award…Due to all the naysayers out there and the biases voters have for their guy & the part of they region they belong too, with the lack of competition question which will be raised since he plays in the MAC. Ironically, this was basically Steve McNair’s downfall on not winning the award during his outrageous days at Alcorn State. Did he deserve it? Probably. Incidentally, when Barry Sanders won it in 1988 how stellar was the competition in the Big Eight Conference? It might have been on the same level as play as one would find in the MAC today? If not on a lesser level?
The last player to win from a school not in the current Bowl Championship Series conference was Brigham Young quarterback Ty Detmer in 1990. Well hey, if the National Championship game can be decided by computers where numbers are thrown in….Why can’t the Heisman Trophy? It would sure take out all the biases, now wouldn’t it? The award would purely be judged on an individuals season numbers…Like it should be, right? I’m sure Bill Gates would be more than happy to scheme up some kind of software program to help achieve this. While this may sound off the wall, it can’t be any worse than having computers decide who the two best teams in the country are, right? Because if I’m correct here the Heisman Trophy is an award that is awarded to the best player in the nation, regardless of where they play…Since when did that change to “The Best Player on The Best Team”? I didn’t get that email…Perhaps it went into my SPAM?
There’s no doubt if Garrett Wolfe continues to produce these sick kinds of numbers week in and week out…Well, the Northern Illinois Huskies should be adding a Heisman Trophy to their trophy case in Dekalb sometime in December! Just too bad the media won’t view it this way and for this all you guys deserve to get bitch slapped by John L. Smith!
