All-Time New York Baseball Team

As we make our way through the states we come to New York. Remember, these lists aren't about players that played in New York, but about players born in New York. I think this lineup may be the most dominant so far.

POS NAME YRS BORN
CJoe Torre1960-1977 Brooklyn
1BLou Gehrig1923-1939 New York City
2BLou Whitaker1977-1995 Brooklyn
3BAlex Rodriguez1994-present New York City
SSPhil Rizzuto1941-1956 Brooklyn
OFCarl Yastrzemski1961-1983 Southhampton
OFRocky Colavito1955-1968 New York City
OFHank Greenberg1930-1947 New York City
DHEdgar Martinez1987-1994 New York City
SPWarren Spahn1942-1965 Buffalo
SPWhitey Ford1950-1967 New York City
SPOrel Hershiser1983-2002 Buffalo
CPJohn Franco1984-2005 Brooklyn

MANAGER

John McGraw, (Tuxton) - from 1899-1932 he racked up 10 NL Pennants and 3 World Series rings.

The more I look at this lineup the more it scares me. This team would absolutely destroy other teams. A pitching staff that rivals the Ohio team and a true powerhouse offense. Combine that with the fact that the bench for this team would include Craig Biggio, Bobby Bonilla, Jim Palmer as the fourth starter, and, just because he has one of my favorite names, Heathcliff Slocumb in the bullpen and I'm not sure there is any stopping them.

I am aware that Greenberg played first base and not the outfield, but I just couldn't bring myself to leave Edgar off the list. And since the only position Edgar ever really played was DH, I gave him the nod there and moved Greenberg. I'm sure he wouldn't mind.

The thing I noticed most while doing this is how good of a player Joe Torre actually was. For his career he had 252 HR and a .297 BA. He was also a 9 time All-Star and, in 1971, led the league in batting average (.363), hits (230), total bases (352), and runs batted in (137) on his way to being named the NL MVP. Not too bad for someone known as a manager more than anything.
