All-Time California Baseball Team

by user Chachi

Talk about an excess of talent. California almost has a ridiculous second team nevermind the players I put on the first team. The biggest problem with placing players on the California team was dealing with the question of steroids. For this particular team I chose to ignore it and focus strictly on the players career, no matter how tainted it may be.

MANAGER

Billy Martin, (Berkeley) - No manager really stood out so I went with the one that would be the most interesting to have coaching this lineup and the most interesting to watch. Few, if any, managers could throw a tantrum quite like Billy.

I don't know what to say about this lineup. It is nothing short of awesome. Just to add an exclamation point to this team, here are some of the possible bench players for this team: Eddie Murray, Cecil Fielder, Jason Giambi, The Mex, Bret Boone, Darrell Evans, Matt Williams, Bobby Bonds, Eric Davis, Dwight Evans, Jim Edmonds, Duke Snider, and Darryl Strawberry.

Chachi, if you happen to get all 50 done or if the AGM community does, I think we should put it to a vote tournament-style to see which state is the best.

That'd be awesome. Add 14 foreign nations and have a 64-jurisdiction bracket. Three game series (each team having 3 SP); you vote for who would win 2 out of 3. I'm sure we can figure out a way to get it done.

The problem would be picking the 14 other nations. Obviously I could figure out Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, probably Panama and Japan, maybe Mexico and Canada, but after that it could get difficult.

We could just do "play-in games", or rule out certain states like Wisconsin because there's nobody really worth mentioning.

This team is just nasty. Ouch! Only weakness is at C and 3B.

Yeah, I wouldn't call Carter a weakness. The man's a Hall of Famer.

How about a Williams-DiMaggio-Bonds 3-4-5?

Darrell Evans had the same career BA and both had simialr power numbers. Outside of them it would be Matt Williams, Eric Chavez, Troy Glaus, or Ken Caminiti and I didn't think any of them really jumped out at me either.

None of them jumped out at you? I'd elminiate Caminiti, because of the steroids. But Chavez and Williams both have better offensive numbers than nettles, and Chavez is also a very solid fielder.

true, but darrell evans had 24 more homeruns than nettles; evans had 98 stolen bases to nettles' 32; and evans had 1344 runs to nettles' 1193. although they are strikingly similar, evans is statistically better.

Honestly they were pretty close and I'm a Yankee fan so that swayed my decision. Not the greatest way (or most objective), but I figured you could make a case for either player pretty convincingly. Also, Nettles had two Gold Gloves to Evans' none and a .961 to .946 fielding percentage at third base.

speaking of caminiti, i'd take him for the 1996 season if this is just a one season team. as far as glaus goes, he hasn't been around long enough, but he definitely looks like he could make this team in a few years

I don't know how long you want to wait on Glaus. He turns 30 next month, and he's had injury problems, and he's not showing signs of improvement. He's already six years removed from his only truly good season.
