All-Time 'Non-Pitchers that Pitched' 25 Man Roster

by user Manny Stiles

It's been a while since the infamous Baseball Rosters of All Varieties incidents of the summer of 2006...

So, here's a new All-Time Baseball Roster!!!

Manny Stiles' "All-Time Non-Pitchers that Pitched" 25-man Roster

This roster is comprised of Position Players with 12 or less (but more than zero) appearances as a pitcher. So no Babe Ruth, no George Sisler...

See the full list of non-pitchers who recorded pitching statistics HERE.

Obviously, since ALL of these guys pitched, I don't need to carry any pitchers on my roster!!!

For obvious reasons I will NOT use a DH, either.

Stiles' Rubberarmed All-Stars

(HoFers in bold italics)

Catchers

Mike "King" Kelly - The reason why I made the cutoff 12 pitching appearances (he had 12)

Buck Ewing

Roger Bresnahan - Utility guy extraordinaire, also most career IP on roster (50 1/3IP)

First Basemen

Jimmie Foxx - (10 appearances as pitcher, basis for Jimmy Dugan, coach of Rockford Peaches, "A League of Their Own")

Big Dan Brouthers

Cap Anson

Jake Beckley - often regarded as a guy who needs to be kicked out of the HoF

Mark Grace- stays on the roster solely for his "Best Mike Fetters Impersonation"

Second Basemen

Jimmy Dykes

Jim Delahanty (Ed, Joe, Tom and Frank's brother)

Jim Gantner

Shortstops

Honus Wagner

George Davis

Dave Concepcion

Bert Campaneris

Third Basemen

Wade Boggs - knuckleballer

Bobby Bonilla

Gary Gaetti

Pepper Martin

Outfielders

Ted Williams

Ty Cobb

Stan Musial

Tris Speaker

Sam Rice

Jim O'Rourke

Manager

Charles Comiskey - Tough to pick a manager as many of the guys on my roster were coaches too, but they were all better players than Comiskey who was (hee hee) LOVED as an owner almost as much as he was loved as a manager...

Just missed the cut

In no particular order - Rocky Colavito (my OF is STACKED), Jose "Header" Canseco, Robin "Punching Bag" Ventura, Tim "Packs a" Wallach, Mark "Folk" Loretta, Bip Roberts (I love the Bipper), Jose Oquendo, Lenny Harris, Steve Finley, Paul O'Neill, Rick Dempsey, Chili Davis, Todd Zeile and Steve "Psycho" Lyons.

Sadly some of the guys who missed the cut are among my favorite players...

So there you go... another Manny Stiles squad you don't want to go up against!

I wonder how many of these were forced to pitch as the game entered the 23rd inning?

some of these guys like Foxx and Kelly actually tried to revive their waning careers by switching to pitching! No no avail; or they wouldn't ahve qualified for my squad (=<12 appearances)

I was at a bar watching it with my wife and I literally fell off of my stool laughing! The game was a dis-'grace' but Gracey was amazing. He even struck someone out! My wife still pulls her 'Grace impersonating Fetters' impersonation out every once in a while! (Her 'Yum-Yum' Kim is a good one too...)

In cricket, the position of all-rounder (a guy who can bat and bowl) is an important player to have, and only rarely can someone do both effectively. I wonder if, e.g. a pitcher that can consistently bat at about .200 would one day become an important part of NL play?

The players are so specialized once they enter the minors or college ball thats its doubtful a player in this era could be good enough at both. Many pitchers in the majors were far and away the best players/athletes on their high school team, but because of their great arms, were forced into solely practicing pitching to make it to the big leagues. You never see a guy that refuses to pitch because he wants to work on his right fielding. But a pitcher hitting .200 or higher would be a fantastic advantage to national league teams. Or, maybe he couldn't bat at all and further bastardize the game, maybe someone that doesn't even play the field could hit for him.

The time it takes to master pitching prevents a person from spending the time it takes to master hitting and vice versa. Blessed natural ability can take you far, but you gotta WORK in the Majors, because everyone else is just as talented or more talented and working just as hard or harder.

They manage it in cricket, so why not baseball? (A rotation man will not play for three days in a row at least to rest his arm, so why not practice batting for a few hours?)

Back in the 1950s, Don Newcombe and Bob Lemon were both pretty good hitters. (Lemon was in the AL, but this was WAY before the DH rule!)

No love for Tim Laker? His pitching stats (2 innings pitched, 2 hits, no earned runs, 1 K) are far better than his normal stats (he's a 3rd string Majors, 2nd string minors catcher)

I tried, I tried!!! to get him on the roster, but contract squabbles kept the two sides apart... We made what we thought was a fair market offer, but his agent wanted to keep being a real prick. Sorry, Seepie!!!

Fair market value for Tim Laker = $10. What did his agent want, $14?

Very well done. I'm sure that took a lot of research.

Not good enough to make my team! That's where. (take a look in "just missed the cut" -he's right after Colavito. Thanks for almost reading the article (from over a year ago!) Maybe if he didn't throw me a shoulder at a baseball crd convention in 1988 I would treat him with more respect.... maybe
