I'm sure there's a better mix of these players, but I just whipped this together... Other than a couple obvious weaknesses on the bench, I like my selections. Your opinions are very much welcome.
- 2B- Craig Biggio (1995: OPS+ 141)
- 1B- Jeff Bagwell (1996: OPS+ 179)
- OF- Lance Berkman (2006: OPS+ 161)
- OF- Moises Alou (2000: OPS+ 151)
- OF- Jose "Cheo" Cruz (1984: OPS+ 144)
- SS- Dickie Thon (1983: OPS+ 126)
- 3B- Ken Caminiti (1992: OPS+ 127)
- C- Alan Ashby (1985: OPS+ 130) - Astros' best offensive catcher of the time.
http://www.baseballmusings.com/cgi-bin/LineupAnalysis.py says this line-up will score about 6.5 runs per game (with Nolan Ryan at P)
Back-up Catcher- Mark Bailey (1988: OPS+ 29) - I wanted a real back-up, and Brad Ausmus was a starter his entire Astros career.
- BN- Luis Gonzalez (1993: OPS+ 122)
- BN- Phil Garner (1984: OPS+ 116)
- BN- Bill Doran (1990: OPS+ 129) - Split this year with the Reds.
- BN- Adam Everett (2001: OPS+ 39) - God-awful, but he was basically a bench player then, and only committed 5 errors.
- SP- Roger Clemens (2005: ERA+ 221)
- SP- Nolan Ryan (1981: ERA+ 194) - I was torn, really; he had 130 more Ks in '87 but an ERA+ of 142
- SP- Joe Niekro (1982: ERA+ 135) - I wanted to mix things around in the all-righty rotation, so I went with a knuckleballer.
- SP- Mike Scott (1986: ERA+ 160) - Cy Young year
- SP- Roy Oswalt (2002: ERA+ 142) - Not his best year, but I wanted to make other years available for other positions.
CL- Billy Wagner (1999: ERA+ 277)
- RP- Octavio Dotel (2001: ERA+ 171)
- RP- Larry Andersen (1989: ERA+ 221)
- RP- Brad Lidge (2003: ERA+ 123)
- RP- Trevor Miller (1998: ERA+ 134
- RP- Chad Qualls (2004: ERA+ 122)
I might go back in and tweak things around when I have time...
