Born on September 2, 1850 in Byron, Illinois, Al Spalding (Albert Goodwill Spalding) played for the Boston Red Stockings and Chicago White Stockings over the course of his 8 year career. Spalding broke into the bigs on May 5, 1871 with the Boston Red Stockings, and put up a 3.36 ERA in 257.1 innings pitched in 1871, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Al Spalding's best season was 1875, when he posted a 1.53 ERA, won 55 games and struck out 75 batters.
