Born on September 17, 1917 in Norfolk, Virginia, Al Gettel (Allen Jones Gettel) played for the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, Washington Senators, New York Giants and St. Louis Cardinals over the course of his 7 year career. Gettel broke into the bigs on April 20, 1945 with the New York Yankees, and put up a 3.90 ERA in 154.2 innings pitched in 1945, his rookie year.
